Go with Option 1. Find a medium res monitor. I once tried to use a Extron VSC 500 to down-scan 24khz Total Vice to 15khz monitor. Picture displays just fine but sadly I couldn't calibrate the guns. :( Never tried to up-scan to 31khz CRT monitor. Might work...

I would try a different monitor just to be sure its not the 246. I've run into a few PC monitors that plain refuse to sync up with a 246/256 without good sync separator circuit.

I don't think its your system but the bin file of CTHR. They're very buggy. It causes my Chihiro Type 1 to freeze sometimes, also the attract mode has graphics and audio glitches.
