This one had some bent pins on the I/O custom chip when the owner first bought. The pins were actually touching each other, so he straightened them out. One of these pins coincidentally belonged to player 1 HK. I believe by the time he got it the damage from the pins being shorted together was done. I still tried reflow of the chip, feeding the 5v to the pin, different resistor networks and it made no difference. In the end I harvested a custom from a dead parts board that a friend had given me. It was a big job but I am happy to say it worked out.

Harvested the custom from my dead parts board. On the board I was gonna swap the chip, I used low melt to make removal easier. Also recapped the board while I was at it.

Great work! that 2029 Custom is about as big and as fine pitch as it's possible to get in SMD, after that it's all BGA - great technique with the remove/replace and amazing to have another CPS3 up and running - these are selling for well over a thousand bucks a pop now so worth the effort financially too.
