I have two System 32 motherboards and both of them are suffering from an audio issue. One board has complete silence, and the other has some really high pitched noise but no game audio.

Does it sound like the Z80 needs to be replaced? And if so, how can I know if a Z80 is potentially compatible as a replacement? I found some on Mouser but is any Z80 of that form factor compatible?

If they report no error in test screen it may be the z80.

I fixed one board replacing the z80.

It is usually accompanied by an IC16 fail. Have you run the test? Problem is, the IC16 failure is a symptom of the SEGA custom failing. I have a DBZ V.S board with IC16 failure. The protection board is dead though, and I have not been able to burn a non-encrypted chip for it yet. So, I am not sure what the status of the sound is.

Re-flowing the custom can help. If you press lightly on the custom chip, does the sound come back?
