  • Dark Staker 3 for CPS2??

Quote from Rotanibor: “ To speak on the topic a bit. The PS1 port is very much a port, and a bad one. There is a lot wrong with that version of the game. Some people have mentioned using the PS2 version of the game since it's "emulated" but my impression is that it is not such a simple task. ” Funny you mention the PS2 version, it was briefly looked at by @strygo recently as part of their digging into the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, and they reckon the PS2 Darkstalkers collection is built on…

  • Dark Staker 3 for CPS2??

I don't know if that would be possible, as the reported reason for both Savior 2 and Hunter 2 existing in the first place is because they couldn't fit all characters into the graphics ROM. No such restriction on CD space, hence the PS1 Darkstalkers 3. I wonder if it would be possible with 2020 tools and better compression? But that's a significant amount of work, if it would at all.

  • That's great work, congrats! Can you tell us more about the 4P multitap? How are you handling four player's worth of inputs on the NG's 2 ports, what was the process like to figure it out? That's a whole level above just making the game!

  • The only downside of the SM64 port is that it's so direct that it's locked to 30 fps like the original. Probably a lot of work needed to unlock the framerate, but it's out there, it could be done eventually by someone motivated enough. The zip file contains source code as well, but I wasn't sure if it was just a copy of the decompilation files that're already on Github, or if it was a modified version of those by the port author with the extra PC stuff too.

Our holiday dates didn't align with its opening times but it looks ace

Welcome! I love Amsterdam, it's got some cool arcades (TonTon Club Centrum is cool, wasn't able to check out the one on the north side of the river though!) and, well, good coffee shops of all kinds indeed

  • A friend in games publishing played a build of this at Capcom UK many, many years ago when it was still in development, probably not long before it was canned. It can't have been very good as it didn't leave much of an impression - he didn't have much to say about it other than it was "alright", he couldn't even recall who he played or fought against.

  • Yeah, the fact it's M2 makes me lean towards it being (extremely good) emulation as well, with their internal emulator just having lots and lots of hooks to do all the gadgets around the sides. It's just the way they tend to do things, they want to emulate the hardware slowdown as accurately as possible.

  • They're not fake, people are certainly playing them and uploading new footage of the two games. The link I saw was on archive.org, so could be hard to track down who it was.

  • That's pretty incredible. The average person would have no idea it wasn't an original.

If they've faked it, they've put a stupid amount of effort into it for nothing, because they're not selling the info or anything like that, it's all on Github…

  • There wasn't a single standard that all arcade devs adhered to when it came to lightguns. Sega had their own thing that changed as new generations came out, Namco did their own thing that also evolved, Namco and Sega working together (Ninja Assault) did yet another thing, Konami did their own thing... it's a bit of a mess. There's not a lot of games that are easily swappable without some form of modification. If it's the same developer/manufacturer and of the same era of hardware, you might be a…

Quote from Derick2k: “ None of those guys have/make their own network equipment, they might rebrand them/just put labels with their names on it, but thats about it. They are all basically off the shell stuff. But, they most likely have custom firmware or some type security on them. ” Yeah, that's all I meant. It's probably something they receive from the manufacturer pre-flashed so they can just throw it in with cab orders and it'll just work when hooked up by the operator. I would ask if I coul…

I believe I was told that the router was Namco branded ("the Namco router" were the exact words IIRC which suggests to me their name is on the case somewhere), so I'd err on the side of it being custom in some fashion.

Right, I asked the owner earlier (who does know about A-P, hi Andy!) and apparently there is indeed a special Namco router (the Tenpo thing?) that is required for it to work, and it came with their cabs when they were bought so they don't know where you'd get one on its own. Hooking them up with crossover ethernet cable is also a requirement if you're not already using it was the other thing I was told, but without the router it's a non-starter.

Only other thing I can personally think of is, ensuring Freeplay is on? That's how the two cabs near me are set. It's a real longshot, but you know how it is with modern arcade game credits these days with each company wanting a slice of each credit, perhaps local networked play is disabled because they're expecting the online network to be set up for the credit-buying process..? If you haven't worked it out by next weekend, I know I'm going back to the arcade on Sunday so I'll try and ask the s…
