      I just bought a bunch of parts to use a Sega arcade gun and I'm struggling to see how the monitor sensors and gun connect to the I/o board.

      The gun ports on the I/O look like this:



      And this is the port for the monitor sensors:




      But... The harness end on my House of the Dead 4 arcade gun looks like this:



      And the cable from the monitor sensors looks like this:



      The HOD4 gun listing was described as complete but am I missing a part or some kind of adapter to go from gun and monitor sensors to the I/O board? If I am, what is it called so I can search for it?

      Also, does anyone here happen to know if the HOD4 guns are meant to have a recoil mechanism. I opened up the gun and I couldn't see any solenoid or motor. Is there meant to be one?

    • I just found out that the HOD4 guns don't have recoil so I wasted my money. I only bought it because I thought it would be a ready made recoil gun that would plug straight into the I/O with minimal fuss.... I guess I should have done better research. HOD Crimson Dawn has recoil so I assumed HOD4 would too. now I've made an ass of myself and some guy called sumption...

      Is it just me or does Sega charge a ridiculous amount for very average parts? $900 for a photo diode in a plastic box.... Namco at least gives you a solenoid.

      I'm still stumped on the gun to I/O connection. I am hoping one of the experienced members will be able to direct me to some kind of cheap gun hose to I/O adapter to save me wasting another $100 on a full harness for a game I'll never own. I'm not too excited about trying to solder cables directly to those tiny pins on the I/O board.
    • The number of wires in all the connectors matches (14 for the guns, 6 for the sensors), so you just need simple passive adapters in between. Time to pull out schematics for pinouts.

      As for connectors, the PCB connectors are JST XH:

      Gun end is Molex standard .093:

      Naturally crosscheck datasheets and connectors with a caliper.

      Sega lightguns rarely have any feedback. There's the SMG guns that are used on Ghost Squad and Rambo and that's pretty much it. Haven't played Crimson Dawn.

      Did you already sort the output from the gun i/o to the i/o board in the cab?
      Not yet. I ordered some 1.5mm 9 pin jst female connectors so I don't have to mod the I/O board. Then I just need to find a pinout so I can figure out which wires go to the two screw terminals for each axis on my Apac.

      It's annoying that no low cost off the shelf adapters are available (and that Sega doesn't just put the right plug on the guns to fit the I/O to start with) but I should be able to make up my own once I have the right connectors if I can find a pinout.

      looking inside the gun, it appears that, of the 14 pins, 7 are for the gun sensor, I assume 2 are for the trigger, 2 for the grenade button and the rest of for the accelerometer. I haven't figured out how I can connect the accelerometer to my PC yet (or if it's even possible). I'm not even sure if it's an optical or analog device. I might just remove it and put a solenoid in it's place.

      Sega certainly sucks when it comes to recoil. The only recoil I have found in type 2 guns is the Ghost Squad series, The deluxe Rambo that uses Ghost squad guns (not the one with HOD4 guns), HOD Crimson Dawn and 2Spicy. I'm probably going to end up selling my HOD4 gun and make up my own recoil guns in a Namco shell.
    • I am building the 9 pin JST output cable from the Sega gun sense board to my Apac for the analog X Y axis. The Apac has 3 inputs per axis. 1 ground common and 2 pins for each axis. The output from the Sega gun board only seems to have 1 pin per axis plus a ground common. Am I meant to just use one of the screw terminals for each axis on the Apac or should I connect the single x axis output from the Sega board to both X axis inputs on the Apac?

      This is what the Apac usually expects as input from regular pots:



      It uses one pin per direction instead of 1 pin for 0-5v

    • For anyone else trying to connect a Sega type 2 I/O to an Apac, apparently right and up are the important ones to connect for the X and Y output. The problem on an Apac is that all 3 need to be connected or it will assume it is a button instead of a pot. So, both left and down terminals need a 100k resistor tied to ground.

      This may be different with a UHID because inputs can be specified in software.
