NA2020 Owners Club Tricks , troubleshooting and more!!

This post is for Troubleshooting and hopefully tricks to get more from the system.

TO GET THE PCB GO HERE, Official Interest list for Namco NA System Multi by Hammy (PCB design by Caius Arcade Repairs & Engineering)

When complete your multi should look same as the examples in the above post.
PIN 1 of all roms FACES THE NA2020 TEXT , inserting ram or rom backward will kill the chip and possible others.

For updated build instructions please wait for twisted's new guide
logic IC LOCATIONS HAVE CHANGED from the 1.3 silkscreen remains same as chip.

"Builders" Are advised to TEST BEFORE ADDING CAPS, it will work fine without, a quick test is fine but not advised to operate for hours like this.
And after fitting the caps test power rails for short before applying power.

1) ROM GENERATION

< INSERT BIN PATCH FILES AND "COMBINE" INFO HERE >

< COPIED FROM TWISTED'S 1.3 BUILD GUIDE FOR THE MOMENT >

File Creation:

All “U”pper and “L”ower Program and Mask Files need to be interleaved and word swapped (eg: “U”
ROMs need to be interleaved into lower position and “L” ROMs need to be interleaved into upper
position) use Hammy’s patched program ROM files and the rest can come from MAME.
Once these interleaved files have been created they can be concatenated to make the Multi ROM files:
type NA\OL.BIN KH\OL.BIN SWC\OL.BIN FA\OL.BIN > output\PROG0L1.BIN
type TP\OL.BIN EXV\OL.BIN CG\OL.BIN EMA\OL.BIN > output\PROG0L2.BIN
type NA\1L.BIN KH\1L.BIN SWC\1L.BIN FA\1L.BIN > output\PROG1L1.BIN
type TP\1L.BIN EXV\OL.BIN CG\OL.BIN EMA\1L.BIN > output\PROG1L2.BIN

type NA\MASK1.BIN KH\MASK1.BIN > output\M0L1.BIN
type TP\MASK1.BIN EXV\MASK1.BIN > output\M0L2.BIN
type SWC\MASK1.BIN FA\MASK1.BIN > output\M0L3.BIN
type NA\MASK2.BIN KH\MASK2.BIN > output\M1L1.BIN
type TP\MASK2.BIN EXV\MASK2.BIN > output\M1L2.BIN
type SWC\MASK2.BIN FA\MASK2.BIN > output\M1L3.BIN
type NA\MASK3.BIN KH\MASK3.BIN > output\M2L1.BIN
type TP\MASK3.BIN TP\MASK3.BIN > output\M2L2.BIN
type NA\MASK4.BIN KH\MASK4.BIN > output\M3L1.BIN

2) NVRAM

DIP SW 4 CONTROLS THE NV RAM BANK SO YOU HAVE 2 'SAVE' SLOTS FOR EACH GAME
BY DEFAULT THE MULTI IS LOADED FOR ALL GAMES SWITCHED TO 2 OR 4 PLAYER ON SW 4.

HI SCORES CAN EASILY BE EXCHANGED WITH OTHER USERS BY COPYING THE RAM DUMP

WHEN READ / WRITE THE NVROM IN PROGRAMMER MAKE SURE THE DEVICE IS NOT LOCKED WHEN FINISHED.

THE 3 JUMPERS CONTROL RAM ACCESS GIVING THE BOARD FULL ACCESS TO THE RAM FOR DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES.
JUMPERS SHOULD BE SET TO "NON - ARROW" FOR REGULAR OPERATION.

A DUMP OF MY DEFAULT SETTINGS RAM FILE IS HERE: (LINK PLS)

3) KEYCUS

SUPPORT FOR GENUINE KEYCUS HAS BEEN DROPPED FOR THE MOMENT AS THE CLONE IS VERY GOOD.
KEYCUS TESTING AND BIOS DUMP SOFTWARE WILL BE ONE DAY AND MAKE USE OF THE ABOVE JUMPERS TO DUMP DATA TO THE NVRAM.

4) OTHER TRICKS

For more support cut the 'tit' off the missing peg so it's flat, there's too many via's for a hole ;)

Knuckle heads has a good test mode on start to verify your romset is in the correct sockets, use this after burning to check.

Cosmo gang only uses lowest program bank and will run with just the prog 0 roms installed for quick h/w test.

A 27c160 can be used in spot M2 L2 as sub for 27c322.

A atmel 28c16 can be used as a (smaller) substitute for the ram. (dip sw4 becomes unused)
When running 28c16 PIN 24 needs to be removed from socket and tied to +5v. (ram goes into back of socket - pin 1 = empty)

* from mame source:
Emeralda: Byte 0x25 of the NVRAM, when zero, enables the FBI logo.
The spot for this on the multi's NVram is : xx and xx (TBC)
