Hey guys,

So I have an opportunity to snatch up an otherwise clean New Net City; the only issues with it are associated with the monitor. It has a good amount of burn, and the seller says that the brightness is cranked up to near it's max on the chassis (Sanwa KW0606A) but the picture looks really dim. I'm wondering if this thing is worth picking up with the main feature of the NNC being it's display, and this ones being kinda suspect.

I have a few questions related to this in addition to getting your thoughts on what I've already mentioned:

  • Is the dimmness a tube/yoke issue?
  • If the tube/yoke are dead, how and where would I find a replacement?
  • How much should I expect to pay for a replacement A68LTF356X?
  • Could the dimmness be an IC issue or something other than a failing yoke? (Seller says they don't hear a buzzing flyback)
  • How much is the price of an NNC impacted by a bad monitor?

It should also be noted that I have a relatively low level of sophistication when it comes to arcade repair. I've done a couple cap kits, rewired so,e lights, swapped monitor transistors and ICs, buttons/controls, etc but nothing really "advanced". The geometry / color balance looks pretty good on this from what I can tell. It's the brightness and burn which I'm wrestling with and just don't know enough about.

I've attached some photos to help you guys see what I'm working with.

Oh awesome. It still has the burn, but i may be able to cope with it for a little while. Where is a good place to find Toshiba A68LTF356X or comparable flat tubes, and what should I expect to pay?

Replacement tubes for the Sanwa PFX can be pulled from US Wagnam Midnight Tune 3 racing cabs. But they'll come with Shanghai Novel tubes. $200-$300 is market price for a used PFX monitor. Anything less is a good price. Sometimes you have to buy the whole cab for a part. The Toshiba Pure Flat also fits into that cab and is a better monitor in that it has better sync compatibility for 15khz games. Otherwise, the image quality on the Sanwa PFX and Toshiba Pure Flat are both fantastic and are the apex for CRT arcade monitors (Nanao never made a flat screen CRT).

You can also look for 29" Toshiba Flat screen TV's in your area, do some surgery to see if it will work as a tube donor candidate. Sometimes they are free when they pop up. If you can do a cap kit, with a little more reading, you should be able to do a tube swap as most of the hurdle is discharging the tube. A cap kit veteran like you is beyond that. I mean, there are more things involved with tube swapping, but most never get past the discharging requirement.

KC sells his NNC's for 600-900 and they are beat up pretty badly and are burned. I would set the starting price there on the high end, then add in a suitable markup for your location. Don't buy such a cab without the marquee holder as it really completes the look. Make sure it is complete. Make sure the art work is intact. Make sure you have an OG panel. Make sure you have the remote board for the monitor. Make sure you have the control harness. Make sure you have the keys. Then check for things in the aesthetic area (rust, dings, scratches) And lastly, make sure you are willing to put in the effort and additional cost for replacing the burned tube, or make sure you are willing to live with it if you cannot replace it.

so geometry looks great so chassis matches yoke
i suspect the resistor on the heater line needs halving in value to give you good brightness etc
its also possible the tube is weak but i think i am correct about the resistor looking at the colour levels
How do I go about halving the resistor on the heater line? Pull the neck board and literally replace the resistor?

i think its on the video b+ line on the main chassis but i need to look at a chassis to check

@gunblade Do you know the resistance of the resistor I'm looking for? And is halving it literally replacing it with a resistor that is half the value of the existing resistor?

Also attaching photos of the board:

Apply Toshiba's trademark to water with your fingers, there may be shanghai novell YS
It’s impossible to look at the Toshiba logo at the top of the line as "ltf356x"

Not sure what you're saying. Pretty positive its a Toshiba A68LTF356X tube.

see your tube label a68ltf356x PICTURE
It says that on the label it's a Toshiba and it looks super legit I don't think it's a fake if that's what you're trying to say. Sorry language barrier I think is getting in the way of me understanding you. I'm trying to figure out where the heater resistor is and what resistance it is on the sanwa PFX chassis at this point.
