Sit down boys and girls and let me tell you my tale of trying to set my Vewlix L to tate.

I wanted to accomplish this:

Looks awesome right?

So I went about removing the monitor. I also cleaned the screen after removing the glass layer, looks so amazing after that. Like waking up after getting Lasik. This Vewlix L is sporting a TLK-320Y display.

Trying to set the monitor in place, I keep running into something:

Hmm, these supports seem to be in the way when the monitor is in tate. In yoko, the supports hold up the back part of the monitor that contains the power supply. So I remove the back cover to try and figure out what I'm doing wrong:

Seems to fit in yoko.

But it's too tall to fit while in tate:

https://app.box.com/s/nce28wc1r938e2imoaez3v8infij7yae

Maybe while in tate, it's not supposed to sit on those supports? Sure the monitor will fit now, but a few problems arise. The mounting holes don't line up now:

https://app.box.com/s/zd017wwfhe35941rj5ezh4jlr6dachpp
And theres a sizable gap between the monitor and the right speakers:

And the left speakers won't fit with out some trimming:

So I'm wondering... what's wrong? Is this Vewlix L body not right? Am I missing something completely obvious? Is it time for sparks to fly and trim off a part of the top support?

Are you sure this is a real L and not a China clone?
I've got the C (not L) but mine looks nothing like that inside (no riveted bar).

See Derick's monitor swap images with the LCD and lower speaker removed.

do you have the manual? I have a second L on the way and planning on doing the same thing.. My first L brought the manual if you want I can scan the pages that describes that process of tilting the LCD if that helps..

I do have the manual, and it doesn't say anything beyond what I tried to do, makes no mention of those supports that are in the way.

As for it being a real L...I think so. It doesn't show any of the clear signs of the Chinese L. The glass on the monitor is not glossy and reflective. The foot level adjusters are hidden. All the wiring internally and the PCBs are genuine Taito.

Thanks for your replies.

Like Jassin says do you have clone or real L?

Did you actually take the back cover off of the monitor? Dont see why you would need to do that.

Can you take pics a bit further away so we can see more of what you are working with.

Did you leave the speakers as they were or did you actually rotate them 90 deg to left or right with the black filler piece alltogether. If you are following the manual, it should be super easy to do. Go over the manual again.

Here's a picture with the monitor in place, the blue tape is to denote the top of the monitor.

Here's with the monitor out of the way:

The speakers themselves aren't removed or rotated. Their screws are loosened to allow for some vertical travel when removing and inserting the black spacer panels. I removed them to try and give me a better view. And I did remove the back panel of the monitor to help determine where my problem was. Wasn't worried about getting shocked as the cab and monitor haven't been powered up in a few weeks. It's easier to rotate the back panel without having to lug the monitor. Again not necessary, just made identifying my obsruction easier.

If he posted a full image of his cabinet, I would be able to tell. From seeing some of the inside pictures, it doesn't seem to be a clone. However, seeing the grill of the speaker makes me suspicious as that is the same grill used on the clones. I have experience in the clones as I've had a few and now have one left for myself which is a Silver L model. Really wish I could find a nice Diamond cab clone...

Ok try installing the monitor the other way, meaning if you turned it clockwise, not try it counterclockwise. Only thing that would make sense if everything else is correct.

Also, line up the back monitor cover with the hole pattern for the screws, I doubt it will install/line up in both directions with it install on the monitor.

The manual says the monitor should be rotated with the conector side down, which is counter clock wise. But I did try clock wise as well and the mounting holes don't line up either.

What I think I'm going to do is remove the rivets holding those supports. This way I could always re-attach them if I needed to.

That is so strange, you should not have to do that.

So wait, the cover does not line up in both vertical directions? If the supports would not be there, would they line up then?

Yeah it is weird. It's as if this cabinet wasn't meant to have it's monitor rotated. If the supports are removed, I can slide the monitor over about 1/8", which will line up the mounts and the speakers on the left can fit.

Thanks for your help.

Thats doesnt sound right, before you resort to cutting the supports out, go over everything again step by step you may have missed something.

When I read the title, I thought you were doing something with potatoes.....

I know in arcade lingo "Tate" has become sort of the norm to represent that you are rotating or vertically mounting your display. I'm still not used to using it, always reminds me of "taters" :D

I wasn't too concerned about rivets. But I did it, removed the rivets:

We got tate! What's weird, Raiden 4 only plays sound out of the right speakers, nothing out of the left. But the other games I hear sound out of both...

Thank you guys for your help and suggestions. Hope none of you have to modify your cabs.

Nice glad you got it resolved, looks good.

Weird though, maybe they messed at the factory when putting the brackets in, not unheard of in manufacturing stuff like that to happen. An error like that would not had been picked it up until someone would try to tate the screen, could have been just your cab or maybe hundreds.

I think that I need to test Raiden on the new monitor because I do not remember the game taking the entire screen. I remember on the original L monitor taking the entire screen like your picture.. also with a scan-line generator in between the X2 and the monitor makes the game look very cool... I noticed that your L also has the power supply on the lower shell to plug in other systems like the Naomi which is a very cool plus:).. congrats on the new setup:)
