I have a SEGA JVS REV3 board that is showing some odd behavior.
In test mode, the normal behavior I should be getting for COIN1 is '0000'. As I trigger this pin with a switch, the value is incremented.

Unfortunately, when I power it up I get the value of '8000'. Triggering the pin with a switch does not change the value.

Can someone give me a hint as to what might be causing this behavior?

COIN1 (Yellow/Blue) on the switch is wired to PIN45 on the JVS board.
Other wire on the switch looks to be wired to +5V according to the diagram.

This leads me to assume that COIN1 needs to be linked to +5V to register.

Am I missing something here or is there a loose/disconnected wire causing COIN1 to show '8000' instead of '0000'?

Both setups read ~5V.

usually your coin mech connects the coin1 (pin45) to ground, the coin counter needs 5V

The JVS command returns 2 bytes, but only 14 bits are the count.
The two upmost bits is a status field. From my notes:

0
Normal
1
Coin jam (still coin present)
2
Counter disconnected
3
Busy (during the process, such as a card system)

So it's telling you counter is disconnected.

I believe you need to spoof the coin meter by connecting the coin meter pin to 5v through a 100ohm resistor.
I can't find the image I want to show here, but this is the idea:

Edit: Found it.

This makes the most sense. I failed to check the voltage going into the counter. I will check this today. Thanks @invzim!

I will probably do this if I can't get my coin meter connected properly. As I have an actual coin meter, I will troubleshoot from there. If worst case, I will spoof it. Thank you for the suggestion @nam9

...and almost a year later this post helped me as well. Many thanks!
Almost two years on, it's just helped me too! :)

I didn't have the coin counter connected in mine
Well I spoke too soon!

I have no idea why it's being so temperamental, but I can't get the coin mech to work again.

Sometimes it's 8000 in the JVS test, sometimes it's 0000 but when I drop a coin through, it'll go all the way down the chute (and not the coin return) but it won't register a credit.

Is coin assignments registered to the mobo or the game? (I'm assuming mobo)
