Hi there, my cps3 just started acting funny. On the p2 side it is as if 'left' on the joystick is constantly being held. I have tried it on both a cabinet and on a supergun, I have also tested other jamma boards on both setups. I am fairly confident that the problem is stemming from the CPS3 mobo.

It is a Darksoft multi (standard SH2) with a mix of Capcom and DS SIMMs.

My first though was that what appears to be a resistor array CR2 near the jamma edge had failed. This is where I traced the P2 joystick controls from the jamma edge into. The measured resistance for 'P2 left' measured an order of magnitude lower than the other joystick controls, ~250 ohm compared to ~2.5 kiloOhm.

I desoldered and pulled this component and tested the board again. Measured resistance from 'left' to ground registers as 0 ohms now.
The result was that now all of P2's joystick controls ceased to function except 'left' was still constantly polling as 'on'.


Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has another CPS3 mobo that they might let go for a fair price I'd potentially be interested in that too :D .

The only other thing connected to the array is the custom I/O ic DL-2929 pin 139?. Maybe a stray wire or solder got on there?
 
Ok so I went poking around with DL-2929 today. Before I go lifting any pins on that IC I was hoping to take a look at a schematic or service manual, XeD or anybody else, would you happen to have access to a PDF? I'm having a hard time finding one online.
 
I have never seen one. What do you get from ground (pin 1) to pin 5 of the resistor array

ok so I took measurements from ground(pin 1) to pins 2 through 10
from ground to
-2 (19 Mohm)
-3 (open) P2up on jamma edge
-4 (40 Mohm)
-5 (open) P2down on jamma edge
-6 (20 ohm)
-7 (open) P2left on jamma edge
-8 (20 Mohm)
-9 (open) P2right on jamma edge
-10 (30 ohm)
measurements were taken without resistor array in place

I also took measurements of the pulled array.
Resistance from 10 to all pins is roughly 1 Kohm, aside from 1 to 10 which is open.

Earlier I was attempting to trace pin 7 back to DL2929 but I could not find any connection.
 
I had my numbering the other way. Pin 4 was jamma 2P left and pin 5 go to the I/O ic. The resistor array. Fantastic thanks for the info XeD. Just to clarify, you traced 139 on the I/O IC back to pin 5 in the resistor array?

I did when I trace it out last night on my parts board. I would be careful on that custom IC as the pitch is very fine. This is all just guess work on my part. I do not know the system very well

Update here. I lifted pin 139 and there was no change in behavior. I am fairly confident that the custom IC is borked. So my options are to either replace the IC or get a new mobo. Is that IC truly custom or can I maybe harvest one from some other board?
