Trackball for AES

Ok, so now I can play Irritating Maze on my AES I was wondering about a trackball solution...

Surely it can’t be as simple as hooking the X and Y inputs to the corresponding up, down, left and right pins on the Neo can it? I have seen a picture of the Despicable Duo with a Freaked IM AES conversion and a custom trackball, so I’m pretty sure it is possible.

It did not work for me when I use the joystick version of the mvs cart, spinner to jamma wire with the 4" track ball. The movement was jerky. I gave up shortly after.
