Anyone with experience swapping original HDD with SSD/CF card?

Hi, I recently bought a THE IDOLM@STER arcade machine. As https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/Namco_System_246/256 says, there is no copy protection on the hard disk; so I'm preparing to make a clone disk in order to protect the 10+ years old original one.
However, good quality IDE disk with 40GB+ capacity (It has a 40GB hdd with about 7GB of data confirmed by Japanese fan) is hard to find in 2018, and there was report SSD with adapter failing.
Is there anyone having experience using a SSD/CF card with adapter? Is there limitations like controller type of adapter, model of SSD/CF?

If there are no serial number checks on the HDD then that should surely be achievable not too dissimilar to the PS2 mod using the network adaptor designed for an IDE drive.

an IDE CF adapter should work fine for replacing the HDD.
