    • System 18 multi - 2) Choosing a target platform

This is mostly about personal tastes here.

I first started my multis venture with the simple Sega C2 hardware: only 2 separate banks (program+graphics and sound samples), no bankswitching and relatively small sized games. In hindsight it was a wise choice, I could quickly get results and avoid discouragement. Donor games were cheap too so less stress damaging anything in case mistakes were made.

Then System 24 (Sega again) was an other challenge with floppy based games and no decrypted sets available. But the difficulty gap was still reasonnable. I worked on it mainly as a treat to myself, being a big Bonanza Bros fan. From the beginiing I knew audience was going to be small given the relative rarity of the system.

The following project was M72, Irem this time, pure gold here regarding games quality. The biggest hurdle was reversing the MCU mechanic as it's absolutely necessary for the samples to work since only the MCU has access to the sample ROMs (by hardware design, no soft hack could change that).

And here we are, at the point I'm already thinking of the next possible candidate for a multi. I had several systems on my list:
      - Sega System 16B: a lot of incredible games, probably too many and that scared me. 3/4 different romboards known to exist (well 2 are identical appart from the jumpers), some with custom chips, more or less complicated to replicate. Also few titles were still undecrypted so that was more work on perpective.
      - Sega System 32: quite heavily populated romboards, games size too high to be doable with simple EPROMs, that meant only a solution with a loader from a high capacity storage device was viable (e.g. SD card). I wasn't prepared for it at the time.
      - Jaleco Mega System 32: less popular and again "big" sized games. Plus romboards have a custom chip that has to be reversed or circumvented.
      - Irem M62: too many different top boards. Not sure it's actually a project killer.
      - Namco NA-1/NA-2: was high on the list, cheap and easy to source, not that many (good) games, uses a romboard making potential installation of the kit easy. Not hugely popular.
      - Namco System 1: was also high on the list, many great games but 3 stack boardsets making multi design quite messy (interconnected daughterboards). Real project killer was finding a donor (rarity and cost) otherwise this would have probably been my choice.
      - Sega System 18: a reasonnable number of games, some extremely sought after, using a romboard (clean multi design).

In fact at the time the only hardware I actually had in my hands was the System 18 and having a soft spot for Sega it became the obvious choice for me.
      Looking for:
      - OutRun boardset even untested or not working
      - Sega Super Scaler hardware (Out Run, Model X, Model Y), even with faulty PCM chip

So you'll be going with a Sega System 18 multi next? Is it similar in principle to System 16 from a development standpoint?

Great choice by my books. :)
It's very similar to System 16B with some easier things and some others harder:
      - all known games but one decrypted when I had to decrypt 3 for S16B
      - 2 different romboards (2 different banking methods) when there are 4 on S16B (3 different banking methods)
      - banking custom chip 315-5436 (ASIC, SDIP64) is harder to reverse than the 315-5298 (PLS153, DIP20) on S16B
      Looking for:
      - OutRun boardset even untested or not working
      - Sega Super Scaler hardware (Out Run, Model X, Model Y), even with faulty PCM chip
