What's new
If anybody is interested, I found what I believe to be a perfect donor tube for a Toshiba PF D29C051 common in NNC cabinets.

I was looking on my local facebook marketplace listings for old 4:3 27” flat CRTs and this one came up:

Advent HT2751A

It’s a boring, no-name, progressive scan display, but I looked up the service manual and found out the tube inside is model A68LTF356X, the exact one found in most NNC cabs.

I think I lucked out. I’m going to pick it up this weekend and sometime soon I’ll test the yoke and post measurements here.

In this case the focus is just the winding ratio of the flyback, yeah. That, or B+ voltage, which could be influenced by the horizontal deflection if the monitor power supply is designed that way (as many are)

Just to follow up on my last post, turns out I got my hopes up for nothing... picked up the TV over the weekend, popped open the case and took a look at the tube. It’s definitely not what the service manual claims is in there...

I presume this tube is at least the same “shape” as the A68LTF356X since this is listed as the part number in the manual, but I doubt the quality of the tube is a worthy replacement for a proper Toshiba PF model... I may still check the yoke specs for kicks when I have the free time.

looks like the one i have in my naomi cab

Shanghai Novel tubes were regularly paired with Sanwa chassis.

Is this a decent tube then?

I think the boards for both sanwa and toshiba chassis were interchangeable, right?

Also I noticed on the AO wiki that the neck board has different C228 capacitor for the Toshiba tube versus the Matsushita tube. Does that mean I may need to play around with this component if I swap out a tube from another brand like this? Do you think there would be any danger in plugging it in to try it (presuming the yoke measurements are ok)?

Check if it's a decent tube by looking at it :P

If the yoke checks out, I expect trying it will be safe.

@Hatsune Mike Saw your tweet about the MS9 tube on Sanwa PFX. I've got two of these PFX's (With original tubes, Hitachi and Shanghai novell) and the image on 15Khz is amazing.

Considering to upgrade the MS9 tube to these PFX chassis to get trisync, is the picture on VGA any good with the low res tube?
In my case the Shanghai novell is great, but a Hitachi tube has a 'round' effect where it develops a pattern around the edge.
As these are single focus i expect the VGA image to be a bit lesser of quality?

I don't think the MS9's tube is any lower in pitch than the PFX original. I'm pretty sure the original PFX tube is also single focus.

I have three different tri-sync and one quad sync crt arcade monitor. As far as I can tell, they all just use the same tubes as found in regular SD crt tv's. It's only the chassis that differs between tri-sync and cga only monitors.

There is no need for a finer pitch for vga mode because the tubes were already designed for 640x480. It's just the frame rate that differs between 480i and 480p.

late model SD CRT TVs started using a slightly finer horizontal pitch (0.8mm instead of 0.9mm) but the difference is negligible. It looks nothing like the 0.3mm pitches found on high end broadcast monitors or crt PC monitors.

All of my crt arcade monitors produce a nice 480p image during games. Your Windows desktop is never going to look great on a corpse pitch tube but that shouldn't matter much.

Afreed, but you have no wierd effects using the pfx chassis with ms9 tube and yoke? Hsize and such are fine? Flat vs curved was no issue?

Yep, that's all been fine. If dimensions are off a tiny bit, you can do well by slightly reducing HV for a larger picture (not changing B+, just the HV itself). MS9 tube and yoke are plug and play; all the same connectors and suitable impedance ranges.

can a Toshiba PF D29C051 chassis work on a tube that a 2930/31/33/34 chassis work on?

No, that chassis also expects MS9-like impedance, yet the focus voltage is typically a tiny bit too low on typical Toshiba MS9 tubes. If you pair it with a Hitachi MS9 tube, you'll get a low heater voltage, but exchanging the current-limiting resistor can bring that up to 6.3v and then you'll have a workable focus range.

tl;dr:

Toshiba D29CR051 "NNC" chassis pairs well with the Hitachi MS9 tube after exchanging heater resistor
Sanwa PFX chassis pairs well with Toshiba MS9 tube without modification

other than a pfx chassis on a pfx tube what other chassis can you use on a pfx chassis.
