Sharp X68000 getting all the love when Towns is out here being equally as awesome
C'mon now. FM Towns looks appealing but is not comparable to the Sharp X68000 library.
4 Gradius games, Castlevania, Cho-Shen Ra, and a long list of shmups and fighters to boot..

That’s exactly why the X68000 is better.
Here’s a video of 84 x68000 shmups in a row:
Many were Arcade perfect and featured Tate modes and higher resolutions.
Dragon Spirit even had Tate mode and 3D glasses so you could play in Tate 3D.
Not only was the it the best shmups system of all time but it had excellent games in other genres including weird ones where you were a princess hucking home appliances down a brick wall to stop its transgressors.
The X68000 came out two years earlier and had a much bigger market share hence the giant library.
Typically the titles that were released on both such as Super Street Fighter 2 played better on the X68000. The FM towns had lower resolution, lacked parallax scrolling and disabled a lot of background animations.
The FM towns had the Q-sound preserved through its red book audio but the X68000 had audio support for sound modules like Yamaha and Roland which had some amazing vibes and were faithfully translated.

Granted there are some really good ones but if you’re gonna compare it to the holy grail there is simply no contest.

I still kind-of want an FM-Towns II, one of the models with the CD-ROM in front. Even though the X68k has the better library and most of the arcade ports now exist in better versions on other hardware or in MAME. And I'm not into the "typical" Japanese PC games.
Maybe I'll pick one up if I see an affordable one in good shape - though I'm sure that'll happen less and less as hardware fails.

the marty's video chip only outputs composite/s-video directly and will likely never be rgb modded
the compact size and consolized form factor has tempted many but in fact it's the worst possible fm towns you can buy

No RGB mod yet. The FM towns Marty processes digital YC into analog YC. I don’t know if anyone has looked at whether the VDP outputs digital RGB. It might be easier to ask Fixel if he’s considering a Marty digital AV mod.

As someone who loves and has repaired dozens of x68000s, I am of the firm opinion Viewpoint is the best game not on the hardware.

But uh, yeah, FM Towns is fairly lackluster outside of Viewpoint (a few other things are fine of course, just not buy a whole computer worthy).

Nothing but the color. Sure maybe a cap is a diff value or a chip was subbed for a diff like part but specs/performance are 1:1.
