I purchased this standup cab and the steering wheel was chewed up so I wanted to replace it.

The manual says it's part DYN-1201 and I believe that's what I bought. However, it doesn't fit the mounting holes from the previous wheel.

I thought perhaps the mounting part wasn't original either since it makes the wheel sit closer to the cab compared to photos online, and the manual also seems to show it extending farther away with what I believe is the Handle Collar, part DYN-1209X. I can't find clear images of it though to help confirm.

To make matters worse, it might be difficult to reattach the chewed up wheel because when removing the mount from the shaft it broke the small piece of notched metal that slots into the mount (so now it will just spin freely without catching it).

I have the piece of metal but haven't attempted to reattach it yet and it might not even hold well enough when doing so. Wanted to start here first and see what people think I should do. Any help is appreciated! And if someone has the correct parts for sale let me know please.

1. Is it true that the chewed up wheel was meant for a different cab?
2. Is the mounting part also not the correct one? If so, what is the correct one?
3. Thoughts on the shaft?

The top wheel is a Happ type one, used on driving games like Rush 2049 through to modern ones in arcades today.

DYN-1201 is the correct wheel for these stand up cabinets

The piece that fell out is a keyway or key stock. You can find assorted packs in auto parts stores or on Amazon. If you still have the old one you should be able to match up something close enough.

The keyway isn't meant to be fixed in place. It's not supposed to be totally loose, but if you turn the shaft upside down, it dropping out is normal.

The shaft isn't stock.

@nem thanks! Very helpful.

I was starting to assume that the shaft wasn't stock. I'll search for that and other pieces or maybe throw up a WTB some day, but for now I'll just buy a new Happ wheel to enjoy using it.

There's a smaller Happ plastic wheel that I believe uses the same mount. It's used on Cruis'n USA and Hydro Thunder. It's slightly smaller than the original Sega wheel.

Personally, I never cared for the rubber coating used on the Happ wheels and prefer the plastic wheel. The rubber can get gummy. However, it's likely not going to be an issue if you're buying new and using it at home.

Yeah, I noticed the different wheels and was comparing them. The gumminess is exactly why I'm replacing the wheel I have, it's gross.

Got it back working again though, so thanks, all! However when driving it drags to the left, so I need adjust it to make it more playable. It's my first driving machine though so I have a lot to read through and troubleshoot before I start asking questions about that. :)

If you read the Jambo Safari manual there is a mention of Happ steering setup as well as Sega… I never knew there was a factory Happ setup, but your machine may fall in to this category!

The manual’s diagrams and part numbers helps show the difference. There’s a few bits to it if you’re going to try and do the swap 👍

Hah I noticed that! I think that's what tripped me up since I couldn't find any photos. Will just leave it alone now and test it out. Other things to tackle anyway.

Thanks for the volume setting @nem. Calibration made it playable and solved the drag issue during gameplay, and the new wheel feels much better. But then I started noticing other issues the longer I played. So I went ahead and bought a few pots. I think I'll replace the one for the break/accelerator too.

These are my current issues, keeping in mind that I had never played the game before in case my assumptions are wrong:

- At the character select screen it still drags to the left and moves back to the guy in the 1st position.
- At the name entry screen, when you rotate max left it will speed through the alphabet, but when you rotate max right it will not.
- Most importantly I can't select any letters at the name entry screen. I assume you select with the accelerator like other places. I also assume that it's not working because it's still registering the left movement and it won't accept the select input at the same time.

Probably won't have time to get to that until next month but just wanted to give an update.

Sounds like the pot isn't centered? Or someone put in a logarithmic pot instead of a linear one. That would be funny.

Interesting thread! I have the same setup except mine came with a drilled to hell original sega wheel to fit on the "handle collar"(?).
So what was the conclusion, that some Jambo cabs came with this mech? Im just trying to figure out how much of my wheel setup isnt original.

Ah yea that makes sense, and then someone tried to fit a sega wheel on mine to make it more "original" i suppose.
Thanks!

Follow up question, what exactly would be the aftermarket replacement parts? As far as i can tell the mech is the same as in the CTHR upright, but the shaft and handle collar isnt. Was the shaft something that would frequently break/get disformed?

The shaft can definitely break. It's not common, but it can happen. It happened to me with Sega Rally. The spline part where you drop the steering wheel on teared off. I also own some shafts that have deformed splines.

However, I suspect it's a whole mech replacement. I've seen Happ mechs that look almost the same as Sega ones.

Take a picture of the mech that you have.

Looks a lot like the explode view in the CTHR service manual afaik?
