Earlier this year I released a multi for the Metro VG420 hardware, a number of people had trouble finding a suitable donor and requested I made a version for the Metro VG460 hardware as well.

The Metro VG460 hardware is nearly identical to the Metro VG420 hardware, electrically they're the same design, but the PCB components are all in different spots and they swapped around the input circuit So despite it needing a completely re-designed multi board it has essentially the same game list.

(V1.2 PCB)

Games this will play:
  • The Karate Tournament (Japan and World Versions)

    kit_game.png
  • Lady Killer
    lk_title.jpg
    lk_game.jpg
  • Last Fortress - Toride (German Version)

    lastfortg_gameplay.jpg
  • Last Fortress - Toride (JP VG460 Version)
    tj_title.jpg
    tj_game.png
  • PangPom's (Metro) [VG460 Patched]
    pp_title.jpg
    pp_game.jpg
  • Poitto! (Rev D) [VG460 Patched]
    po_title.jpg
    po_game.jpg
  • Sky Alert [VG460 Patched]
    sa_title.jpg
    sa_game.jpg
All game above use original unmodified code, except for those ported to the VG460 hardware, which required patches for input control remapping but are otherwise unmodified.

Donor Boards for this = "VG460-(A)" PCB which includes:
  • Last Fortress - Toride (VG460 Versions)
  • Lady Killer / Moeyo Gonta!
  • The Karate Tournament
They look like this (note the large VG460 text on the bottom of the pcb):

I suspect VG460-(B) PCBs will work, however I don't own one to test and confirm.

*Note: there is a Korean (possibly bootleg?) board with a "VG460-(A)" label that WILL NOT WORK as it's a different layout.
It looks like this:

Interest List:
1. AlxUnderBase
2. skusuma
3. plasticfactory (needs a donor)
4. ForestOfDreams
5. onekei

Anyone know if there are useful differences (something other than the title screen and language) between World Region and Japan region releases for Karate Tournament or Lady Killer? or heck even between versions of pang poms or poitto?

the reason the VG420 multi has 3 versions of toride is that each version has something unique
JP release is the original release
CN release has "adult" content
KO release uses alternate tiles with fruits and animals instead of mahjong tiles

On VG460 BOTH the JP and German releases of toride allow for adult content and tile selection via dip switches, so the main difference is just the language (Japanese vs German)

I could include the Chinese VG420 release of Toride on the VG460 since it has English langue menus but I could include but if Karate tournament or Lady Killer JP versions are more interesting I could set that up instead.

unfortunately whichever option I go with will essentially be locked in since the address logic programmed into the mult itself needs to be customized by the game position.

Toride 2 was never released as a VG460 game as far as I know.. they were released on the MTR5260 PCB which is different architecture.
For reference is this my Torride II PCB:

If your is actually on VG460 hardware it would need to be dumped and would be great to have as an add on to the multi!

As soon as I posted I checked my board and realized it wasn't a 460. Thought I could delete it fast enough :D

As a weird completionist, I'm interested but will wait to buy until I find a proper donor.

After diving a bit into the different regional variants of the different games I've decided that the last slot on this multi will have the Japanese version of Karate Tournament

the World and Japanese versions both have English language title screen and menus but the voice audio is unique between the two, and the World version has sped up animations between rounds, where the JP version plays at normal speed, I'm guessing they thought the original speed would be too slow and boring for non JP players?
JP Version:

World Version:

On Lady Killer the World and JP versions have different character word bubble text and voice samples. the world version also offers both "full" and "partial" adult content where the JP version is partial only, so the world version seems like the more complete version of the game. I haven't been able to determine any differences in pang poms or poitto, and sky alert only has 1 version.

I'd like to get a couple of these boards in the hands of testers before I commit to doing a larger quantity run. If you're in the USA and have a donor board ready and interest in testing let me know. (Sorry to my International friends but if there are issues and a board needs to be sent back to me international shipping just complicates things :( )

ok so I've identified at least 4 different variants of the VG460 hardware 😵

1. The original Japanese VG460-(A) PCB - This has a large white volume pot, light green traces, black caps and SMD resistors and decoupling caps, PLDs are typically socketed
gonta.jpg

2. The updated Japanese VG460-(B) PCB - same as above but has VG460-(B) silkscreened on it.

3. The European VG460-(A) PCB - This is similar to #1 but has a square gray pot, gold outlined traces, (some) light blue caps and through-hole resistors and decoupling caps, PLDs are typically NOT socketed.
lady_killer_alt.jpg

4. the Korean VG460-(A) PCB - this PCB is a lighter green in color and has the position of the chips moved around as you can see this one is completely different despite having the same model number 😣

So I own PCBs #1 (JP rev A) and #3 (Euro) and while #1 works great with the multi #3 refuses to boot any games (I think it's a cpu clock issue), so I'll need to work that out.
PCB #4 (Korean) will not work with the multi because the ROMs are in the wrong spots so it physically can't plug into it :(

I have no idea if PCB #2 (JP rev B) will work. I had originally assumed that PCBs 1 2 and 3 were all essentially the same and should just work, but given the issues I'm having with PCB #3 I now have some skepticism that PCB #2 wont have some sneaky changes.

I just ordered a new soldering station ... watch out ... loool ... #2 is on my hands and ready for the tests
Remain only to try the kit on it ...
