Recently, jonnymodlin suggested a project that would bring the US English version of SSF2 Turbo to parity with the Japanese version. I decided to take a look at this and was able to put together a patch that matches the Japanese experience. The project page is here.

What's here is exactly what the original request asked for: Japan's Super Street Fighter II X (ssf2xj, 940311) in English, with the Japanese game left alone. Nothing about the play changes: same speeds, same damage, same throw ranges, same code flags. Only the text is new.

Included:

- All 136 win quotes, translated fresh from the Japanese and fitted on screen, with Capcom's own English as the style guide. The export game only had twenty.
- The strategy tips on the continue screen, which the US boards stripped out.
- Every ending in full, in English, including Akuma's ending and the intro dialogue the export game cut.
- The title screen reads "Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Grand Master Challenge" under a US region identity, keeping the Grand Master Challenge presentation. Free Play is enabled.

It ships as an IPS bundle over the stock ssf2xj set, keeping the original ROM sizes and key, so it runs on a real CPS-2 board as well as in MAME. There's also a MiSTer MRA overlay, and an HBMAME set definition (ssf2tgmc).

Feedback and bug reports are welcome!

I’d prefer that set because it’s the one I have on my PCB, but the decrypted version would work for me too.

It is missing Jane and Amy arriving in M. Bison's stage when Guile picks up M. Bison for Guile's ending in Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Grand Master Challenge (English Restoration) along with and the win quotes, ending quotes should all be caps instead of lowercase and continue tips should be caps with moves and commands instead of lowercase.

Thanks for sharing! I look into those two issues.

I plan to keep sentence casing. Using all caps was lazy on Capcom’s part and visually it looks bad.

If you see any other inconsistencies, please share them!

It is missing Jane and Amy arriving in M. Bison's stage when Guile picks up M. Bison after defeating Akuma or M. Bison for Guile's ending, more longer ending quotes and blue ending quotes for each characters' endings, more win quotes for all characters, continue tips with moves and commands for Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Grand Master Challenge (English Restoration).

Thank you.

Stop using AI!

rc2 is out, and it covers the two issues jonnymodlin reported:

  • Guile's ending is complete. Jane and Amy arrive to stop him, as they do in Japan. That scene and a few others were being skipped under the US region; every ending now plays out exactly as it does on the Japanese board.
  • Ending text looks like the US game's again: the fighters' lines in blue, everyone else in pink, and every caption centered in its box.

Lose a round and Japan's game gives you a tip, now in English.

Also in rc2:

  • The English was checked line by line against Capcom's own US script. Wherever Capcom's wording kept the Japanese meaning, it's now used: 54 lines across the win quotes, the endings and the Tournament Battle rules. Chun-Li's "Men are no challenge at all" is now "You're no challenge at all". The Japanese story points stay, like Shoryuken instead of Sheng Long, and Cammy's spy story.
  • Akuma's reply to M. Bison is complete: "I am your shadow. Those possessed by the shadow must die. Your time is up!"
  • Dhalsim's teleport tip now explains that your input decides where he reappears.
  • Only sfxj.03d changes, so rebuild your set with the rc2 kit.

On the rest: the win quotes and the continue tips are already the complete Japanese sets. All 136 quotes are in, and the tips the US boards stripped out have been there since rc1; rc2 only rewords Dhalsim's. If a specific tip still reads wrong to you, name it and I'll take a look. I'm also still keeping sentence casing rather than all caps.

I've also released a companion build, Super Street Fighter II EX: The Ultimate Championship. Same Super Turbo underneath, with enhancements from some of the console ports:

  • Shin Akuma and Ten Akuma playable from the start, picked from Ryu. Ten Akuma has his Super gauge and the Raging Demon.
  • The three bonus stages from Super Street Fighter II are back in one-player games: the car after three fights, the barrels after six, the oil drums after nine.
  • Tournament Battle. With the link adapter it runs eight players across linked cabinets; without it the game plays normally.
  • Two more colors for every fighter, and the VS screen and fight portrait show the color you picked.
  • A new title screen, modern move names, and Free Play in the Japanese build too.
  • USA build carries all of Grand Master Challenge's English; the Japan build keeps the Japanese.

Link cabinets and the title turns into The Tournament Battle.

The existing fighters play exactly as they do on Japan's Super Turbo, and it keeps the board's ROM layout, so it runs in MAME, HBMAME, on MiSTer and on a real CPS-2 board. The Tournament Battle link code comes from originalgrego's SSF2X Tournament Battle restoration, and the bonus stages are adapted from Capcom's Super Street Fighter II.

It's a release candidate. If anyone here has a link setup, I'd love to hear how Tournament Battle goes on real cabinets.

There's more in the same batch, including Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter EX and English restorations of MSHvSF and Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha. It's all in a new projects thread, which is where I'll be posting new releases from now on.

I know folks are ragging on him and some of it is warranted.

That being said, jonny has provided a number of helpful bug reports and identified differences that were not well documented elsewhere. I appreciate this.

The lists of games aren’t as helpful, given that it is essentially every game Capcom made. 😜
