    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

Whelp. I fixed it! It was indeed the sound oscillator/crystal. I used a known working one from a donor board. Check out how rusted/corroded it was underneath: I also got those extender cables in and work great: Now I'm going to move on and start a thread on another CPS 1 PCB that has...

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

Ah, the sound clock crystal. Gotcha. Don't think I have that on hand. I need to order a few. Edit: Wondering if this is a suitable replacement or not: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ecs-inc/ECS-100AX-035/827253 Edit 2: Going to link this here too with a similar issue where...

Curious where that's located on the PCB?

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

I doubt it's the sound roms, although I could re-burn to test. Reason being: When I swap to a 100% known working A board with this game, zero issues. If I swap this faulty A board onto another CPS1 (converted SFII to Ghouls and Ghosts) I can re-produce these intermittent sound issues. This...

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

Also forgot to mention that I had a spare Yamaha DAC (YM3012) so I socketed and swapped another one in. Nothing changed. I then proceeded to the Z80 reset as I mentioned in the post above. Del

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

I need to give that a shot, but I'm pretty sure it's a digital issue. I tapped into the Z80 Sound CPU at the reset pin 26 and ground at 29. I soldered a wire on each pin. When I lost sound, I was able to jump the two wires together to send a reset to the Sound CPU and the sound came back. If...

Stays dead. Sometimes I hear pop instead of sound or a screech. But mostly silence. Power cycling restores it. Del

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

More progress. Replaced the Sound CPU Ram with a known working one. Thought I had it solved after running the game for an hour in attract mode and then playing for another 15 minutes. Left it in attract mode afterwards, and the issue is back. :-/ Tried replacing the HA13001 sound amp. Nope...

    Repair Log: CPS1 No Sound

Whelp, replaced my sound CPU and no change. Going to try the sound CPU ram next, as I have a donor PCB I can grab it from. No harm done. I'm pretty adept at socketing iC chips. My symptoms from the start: Intermittent sound. SF II game will start up just fine and will randomly lose sound. At...

    Earth connection

Not quite sure what you are asking, but I'm guessing it's due to a ground loop which could cause interference in the sound or monitor signal. https://www.bapihvac.com/application_note/understanding-ground-loops-application-note/ Del

Wondering if you will be venturing into parts as well? We've had some vendors here go South when it comes to reliability. I myself am looking for the non-vs version of the Blast City innards and marquee. Mine came with the vs. configuration and I can't use normal marquee graphics. Del

Aero City trackball rollers are worn; any options?

Lubricating bearings has been discussed in depth over at KLOV. Basically, you don't want to use thicker oils like 3 in 1 which will gunk it up. Go for something better like Liquid Bearings. But you must dissolve the old oil and gunk with Acetone (nail polish remover) first. Then apply the...
