Sigh. I was hoping that it would work without the adapter for the MVS and F3 games because unfortunately I don't have one and probably won't be able to buy one any time soon (because it's no longer available).

I would never have expected that. You probably need the additional board for Eco Fighters. What about Puzzle Bobble(MVS) and Arkanoid returns? Brizzo(?) once made a few adapters, but they no longer seem to be available. Please use your wisdom and bring light into my darkness.
