I have upgraded three X3 with the E3-1290 v1 and haven't ran into a problem. Maybe your CPU is faulty. Who knows. Hopefully you get your problem resolved. Though upgrading the GPU is actually more important than upgrading the CPU to be honest.

The fastest CPU that I have had success with is the Xeon E3-1290 (3.6ghz). But yeah, a GPU upgrade would be better overall.
