Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

@caius: Yes, without designing another ASIC, I see no way to directly replace the IC with a replica that fits neatly onto the solder mask geometry just like the original package. On the other hand, I think it may be feasible by designing an adapter board that acts as an interposer – let's not...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

So it looks like Furrtek has decapped and imaged the GP9001  [1], [2] John McMaster so far also had been interested, but busy with other projects. Not long ago I was only imagining it, and now... huge step for the preservation of Toaplan's legacy! :)

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

I was unaware Raizing eventually went beyond using old stock and produced it themselves. I take it that the Raizing-produced ones look like this? (couldn't find a better picture) Was it one of these or a Toaplan-produced one you handed off @Hatsune Mike? In any event, definitely keep us...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

Very promising feedback, thanks y'all! So I've been mulling over this, and I came to the conclusion that I won't be starting a crowdfunding campaign for this in the near future: the stars are not really aligned currently, so to say. Some factors are hard to predict, and I think we...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

Two out of four companies have responded by now, I figure it'll stay that way. More or less quoting the responses: Company A: Decapsulation, imaging of the top metal layer + bond wire assembly: $600.00 Planar layer-by-layer deprocessing with high-magnification, high-resolution image-stitched...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

@dewmansnk: thanks for these suggestions! I focus on universities and people who are more "on our side" / more grassroots so to say, but still have a reputation and the means to produce very good results (like caps0ff for example). Decapsulation and imaging can be quite expensive. However, I...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

So far no reply from anybody who could decap, but I'm in the process of drawing more attention to this. My means are fairly limited though, so if y'all know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody – you get the idea. If you want it to happen, by all means, make some noise ^^ @xtrasmiley...

    Darius Gaiden Extra Cartridge?

Hey, Darius Gaiden Extra is an "official hack", it was never an official Taito product. People play it on MAME or make their own carts. As I understand it, Taito showed responsibility for it, but I can't say anything about how it got out of Taito or its ROM dumping history – would be interested...

DARKSOFT Darius Gaiden EXTRA: Missing Background Layer on Zone D

Bump. Still trying to figure out why I can't make Darksoft's patch work on a real game cart. To start with, there are actually 2 more patched bytes in dge_mpr0.bin/dariusgx.12, which I overlooked when I produced that diff appended to my Dec 11 post, making for a total of 5 changed bytes. How is...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

Contacted Near, caps0ff, and another person who could potentially be aiding a decapping effort about this. Still not entirely sure on what I've let myself in for - at this time I still only have a vague understanding about what exactly it entails to arrive at an HDL (Verilog/VHDL)...

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

@rewrite: That's cool, can you exclude that it's not the GP9001 that's broken? As for byuu → Near: byuu is a new emulator (frontend), and "higan and bsnes development will continue as normal". Given Near's rationale, I don't think this or the online handle change has to do with the SNES PPU.

Effort to get the GP9001 VDP chip, part of Toaplan V2 hardware, decapped

Over the past few months, in a thread at shmups forum, we've been analyzing the cause why some Toaplan V2 PCBs are not recognized by the OSSC and show artifacts with some other ADC products. Essentially, with certain games, the GP9001 VDP outputs a broken Hsync signal, and in the course, I...

Any PGM Conversion info out there?

If you're referring to the program ROM from here (aka. DOJDUAL.bin, aka ddp3_p1_dual.bin, aka. "Asure version"), from before running rom_gen.py, this is the one with the crash in it, as Asure pointed out and I've read the EPROMs on my cartridge - they're the same. If you're referring to the...

Any PGM Conversion info out there?

I told you it freezes no matter what on the Knights of Valor conversion :) Since you indicated that you use Fluffy's PCB instead, which is different in some ways (notably what Fluffy pointed out here), I reached out to you. And, lo and behold, it didn't freeze for you (I on the other hand...

Any PGM Conversion info out there?

I asked @ekorz if he could check and he kindly did so :) He could indeed play through the first WL loop just fine! Here's a short video of the ending sequence he recorded: click Could there be a relatively easy way to circumvent the bug on Knights of Valor conversions, maybe even without...

Any PGM Conversion info out there?

Interesting suggestion - do we know if the freeze happens on your ROM PCBs? (quicky went through the respective thread; this user wanted to check but apparently dropped the subject)
