A long time ago I tried to make my own 4-way gate, using a piece of plastic cut into shape. It was too soft to work effectively, the stick would force the gate to bend and then get jammed under it.

But now, with a 3D printer annoying the rest of the household, I've modified someone else's octogate, and now a perfectly functional 4-way restrictor exists for the awesome SNK* sticks:

Special attention was paid to the 'break-before-make' movement so that diagonal inputs were entirely avoided. There is slightly less throw as a result, but the alternative was uncomfortable movement between deep cardinal pockets. As it is, it feels much smoother than it looks. It makes all those 4-way maze games (Ms PacMan!) much more playable, and should make games like Mr. Do and Dig Dug more enjoyable as well.
