Battery needed for PGM mobo?

What exactly is the battery in the PGM motherboard used for.
Will things work without it?

My motherboard appears to have some... battery issues.
As in, it is growing white fur.

Would simply removing it and not replacing it work?

Yes you can remove it. It only saves highscores I think. I removed mine as well, same issue.

Looks like the cart connector is also real flaky, but works now
