Hey there. A friend of mine bought a CPS1 sold "as is" from some guy, and was told it was a Strider PCB.

Upon further inspection, after having received the board, we decided to dump a few EPROMs and some of them had 3 Wonders data. Most others, perhaps from being exposed to sunlight for a veeeeeeery long time, were either corrupted or blank.

We are far from being CPS1 experts, and we would like to know if, from these pictures, anyone could point us in the right direction -- was this a 3 Wonders board? Is there a way of knowing? Since he bought it as Strider, could it have been originally Strider?

And lastly, can it become Strider once again? We noticed someone tinkered with the jumpers in the past...

CPS-B-01 is originally only used in 3 games according the AO wiki:
- Strider
- Forgotten Worlds
- Ghouls n Ghosts

B board matches Strider as well, so I would say it is/was a Strider indeed.
No idea why someone would convert this to 3 wonders... ?(

I have some more pictures of my friend's board.

He says whoever messed with the board earlier, used 27c4002 eproms.

Also, he would like to know if the jumpers are correct (he's trying to make it Strider once again).

Thanks in advance :-)

It's possible that the CPS-B-01 chip on the C-board originated from a Strider, but this board appears to be a conversion from miscellaneous parts. If you look at the mame video driver source, you can find which boards where used on which games. The original release of Strider and Daimakaimura (JPN version) had CPS-B-01 chips on small C-boards (88622-C-1/2). The C-board in the picture looks like a Mercs C-board. What's unusual about it is that the pin headers are missing (CN3 for example, which is used for Player 3 controls on Mercs). I think it's likely that the C-board had a chip transplant performed. Mercs used a different chip, the CPS-B-12.

That B-board didn't make an appearance on CPS1 hardware until SF2WW in 1991, two years after the original Strider. It was used in King of Dragons as well. Notice that the security chip at A1 is missing. No games will run without this chip because it maps the graphics data.

The usual ways of identifying the origins of a CPS1 board are the PAL security chip on the B-board, and the mask roms/eprom labels if they're original. This board has neither, so it's impossible to say for certain what it originally was. But it's clear that pieces have been mixed and matched.

If you want to convert it to Strider, you would have to craft a custom PAL/GAL chip in order to use that B-board. The PAL/GAL dumps in mame are for the original 89624B B-board or the later 91634B B-board from the Japan resale version.

Oh crap!

Oh crap, again!

What about the strideruc Japan romset? There's one made internally by Capcom (according to some websites) with over 50+ changes in the code so it runs on a SF2: WW 90629b board. Would this work?

Here's an interesting article I found regarding that version: http://www.jammarcade.net/strider-conversion/

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it would be a straight conversion. That conversion runs with the CPS-B-17 chip on the c-board. Maybe the PAL/GAL chip from that conversion would possibly work if it were available?

This "in house" conversion is just BS to me. Why would a Capcom employee make a conversion of Strider when he probably had access to the OG one? Why was there so many mistakes in the patched roms and why was it left unfinished? Someone working at Capcom had certainly access to all the information to perform a flawless conversion.
Furthermore this dump led to the modification of one layer mask for the B-17 chips in MAME and now the value is incorrect (0x14 instead of 0x10).

Anyway to answer your question yes with the appropriate PAL dump you could convert your Frankenstein board to Strider.

Hello there @jepjepjep and @Apocalypse

Thanks for helping us out. I passed the information along to my friend, let's see if he can figure something out.

One thing he noticed yesterday, upon further inspection, is that someone "poached" the C board for parts, because it's missing a LOT of components, even simple ones.

This isn't good news. Why would someone pull parts from a working board?
Do you have a way to test each board separately (A/B/C)?

Anybody notice anything odd about the inter-board connectors on the C board? I don't think I've seen a Strider board in person, but those look like standard PC 40-pin connectors. Also some jumpers that look very non-factory. The B-01 doesn't look to have been replaced tho, just from what I can see of the solder joints. I believe I have seen one or 2 other "oddball" CPS1 boards, possibly on KLOV, that were some sort of frankenboard and also had those PC-style connectors.

Separate note - I spy some orange ferrite beads on the A board. Is that by chance a DASH (12mhz) A board?

My friend bought it as non-working. The A board is working fine, B isn't and C is, well, stripped of many parts.

He is trying to bring it back from the dead, but since it's some sort of frankenboard, we're still having difficulties...

I did not notice that. The C board, though, seems to be made from a different material -- cheaper, I might add, than the A and B boards.

I will ask my friend if the A board is a 12Mhz one and I will let you know.
