Dead CPS3 motherboard

This is a board that was working up until a few weeks ago. My friend sent it my way to check, I did all the obvious stuff. Opened and cleaned the cart with rubber eraser and 99 percent isopropyl, cleaned the cart slot with a card wrapped with 2000 grit sandpaper and then same card wrapped with microfiber and isopropyl. I also took out all the Simms cleaned them and their respective slots, reflowed the pins on the slot for good measure. I tried another 2 known working darksoft carts on the board and tried the darksoft cart that came with the board on a working case and it loaded fine. When you power on the board does nothing, the SCSI2SD goes through it's paces. All you see when you first power on is a slight sync pulse on the ossc screen and then it goes away. I also had replacement cart slot and thinking that maybe the pins on the old one were too lose, went ahead and replaced it. Before ya all go saying that maybe I damaged something during the cart replacement, let me assure you I went with my meter in continuity and verified all pins. Just posting here to see if anyone has any suggestions, my next step would be to go and verify all the vias around the cart slot.

Your DL2829 chip (CCU) might either not be working or has lifted pins. I had the same problem (lost/no sync when powering up using an OSSC) on a now dead motherboard a while ago & reflowing the pins on the CCU helped. Unfortunately, the chip then died due to some freak voltage spike, rendering one of my boards completely useless.

The other thing you can check is the little LS08 on the underside of the mobo…I think that is responsible for sync. Check the traces and/or if the chip legs appear corroded, etc. Just my two cents.

Thanks I'll try reflowing tonight, also I got it to show video a few random times so the ls08 is a possibility also.

nope this a board that belongs to a friend and I am attemptiing to fix it for him.

Fully reflowed the ccu and made sure there was no shorts and still no dice. The 74LS08 looks good, I am gonna see about ordering another one to try.

I just noticed there is a digital AV board installed on here - have you tried to see if you get video output from the JAMMA edge or are you only working from the digital AV board?

If you have a scope you can test the sync signal to see what is happening. If you don’t have a scope you can still use a multimeter to test the voltage and see if it’s good and work back from there

I believe the PPU generates the H and V sync and then it is combined through the LS08 before going through the resistor ladder and out to the JAMMA edge

All the pictures you saw here were taken from the jamma edge. At this point the board gives no video at all. With or without a cart.

Did you ever figure this one out? I'd guess it's probably a bad custom, considering all of the work you've done to it and it still doesn't work. :/
