Recently got this 90kg behemoth Sony CRT (KV-HR36M31 for reference) in place only to find the following colour issues.

I had the CRT freighted to my house quite a distance where it then sat in my garage for a few months and switched off. I tested it in the garage finally and noticed the discolouration, thinking this is an easy fix with the degaussing wand when I move it to its final destination 20metres away in the living room.

However, the degaussing wand has no permanent effect on the problem after the CRT has been shifted to the shelf.

Where to next? Any help is appreciated.

What kind of degaussing wand do you have? If you have one of those 5 dollar things that's not much larger than a stick of butter, it won't work. You need a proper coil to degauss a screen of that size.

Also, that Sony cart is cool. I want one.

I have a degaussing wand about 30cm in length, Arlec brand. Certainly makes the colours on the TV go wavy when I activate it so can assume working.

The Sony stand came with the PVM and also has custom straps (sort of seatbelt type material?) to secure it. My best guess is it was a presentation/stage stand for the PVM (2950QM).

Can co-sign that the Arlec degaussing wand is the real deal and one of the best money can buy...

Colors going wavy doesn't necessarily mean anything. I have a 31" 4:3 Beko where the PTC controlling the degaussing coil was damaged. I tried degaussing it with a crappy wand and the colors would get screwy, but the tube returned back to its rainbow self. Upgraded to a large degaussing ring and that reverted the tube to normal colors.

Anyway, I'll take @djsheep's word that your kit is decent.

Does your monitor auto-degauss on power up?

I would pop the back cover off and see if there's something that could affect deflection.

Yes the monitor degausses on start up (can hear the crackle and static).

I have now moved the set into the garage and will remove the cover and report back.

Ok back is off, here is what I am looking at -

Looks like the purity rings on the yoke haven't moved, so you can likely cross that off the list.

I would try one more time with the degaussing wand with the back cover off. There's a button on the wand, right? Put the wand at the edge of the tube where the discoloration is and tap the button. See if you can get it to normal colors. Don't press and hold, just tap.

Update on this - it was a detached shadow mask on the sides.
This is now a parts machine for my 2nd KV-HR36M31
:(
