Hello Gyus,

I have a Naomi 2 board that only boots with a Naomi 1 game cart.
It passes RAM test withou any BAD IC.

It won't boot with any Naomi 2 cart, with a DIMM or a NET DIMM.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with this board?

Tried with diferent BIOS version and the result is allways the same.

Thank you,
iTRDC2.

make sure to do RAM test with Naomi2 cart plugged in, or DIMM loaded with Naomi2 game, or no cart/DIMM at all.
otherwise, with some N1 cart or game in DIMM, will be tested only Naomi1 part of RAMs.

if it's not the case and all N2's RAM ICs good and accessible - perhaps ELAN (T&L processor) is dead.

Hello @MetalliC,

I know that Naomi 2 carts will test other ICs, but has I told before, the board does not boot with Naomi 2 carts, neither with DIMMs.

Any other ideias?

Anyway thanks for the tips.

huh, did I get you right and "does not boot" means "completely dead, just a black screen instead of Naomi2 logo" ?
if yes - the cause might be anything N2-specific, any from ~1/3 board's components.

Yes "completely dead". Not even a "black screen". It appears on my screen "no video output signal".

On the other hand works fine with Naomi 1 cart games only.

It is indeed strange. It is the first Naomi 2 that passed by my hands with this behavior ;( .

Hi

I have the same problems with my Naomi 2.
the only thing better is it boots with the netdimm randomly and i can play naomi 2 games. after switching it off and removing then reinserting the netdimm, it wont boot again. it's hard to know when it decides to boot and let me play games from the netdimm.
sometimes it shows the white boot up screen where the naomi 2 logo starts to scroll down but it black screens in 1 second.
there are times it boots but shows error 34 when i unplug the crossover cable from the netdimm.
is there any experts that can find out which component is dead or failing on the naomi 2 based on the info i've given?
the netdimm works fine on my naomi 1 so i can rule out the netdimm as faulty. all the Naomi 2 RAM ICs are fine as i've ran the test when it was working.
i have recapped my netdimm and naomi 2 board. i can rule out the capacitors on naomi 2 being faulty. the supercap leaked and i've removed it. the row of holes nearby have blackened though. i think it's Jtag holes? i have cleaned up the area and there doesn't seem to be any broken traces. looks good like the rest of the board.
hope someone can help as i dont want my investment to go down the drain.
just hoping a rom cart is released with naomi 1 mode as at least i can still use the naomi 2 to play naomi 1 and atomiswave games if it can't be repaired.

I see.
nothing really strange, N2-specific features and components was added like upgrade onto N1 hardware architecture, also boot ROM have 2 BIOS copies - one for N1 games and another for N2 games, and they works in a different way.
so, if lets say ELAN (big chip under heat sink between 2 HOLLY/PowerVR2 chips), or 2nd HOLLY, or any components associated with them is dead or broken - board will still work with N1 games, but not N2

My does not boot with any kind of DIMM (DIMM, NETDIMM in GDRom mode, NETDIMM in NET mode).

Which BIOS version are you using on your NAOMI 2?
Mine only boots with 23608, A or B. With 23608C it does not boot.
By the way the 23608C already has the capability for NETDIMM network configuration.

Regarding the Naomi 2 board recap, did you changed only the normal eletrolythic capacitors, the surface mount capacitors or all?
Do you have any list with the capacitors reference (CXX or ECXX) and its value?

Did you noticed any diference after the recap?
Don't know on the Naomi boards if bad capacitors can influentiate the board boot. Do you know?

Regarding the 0.1F Super Capacitor I already replaced it.

Regarding bad traces, mine does not have seem to have any.

Are you able to run games via NETDIMM using a PC or you allways get ERROR 34?

Best Regards,

Is there a BIOs maybe that just disables the N2 BGA all together?
as was said in my prev message - any Naomi2 BIOS is actually 2in1, when loaded with Naomi1 game will be used that one half which doesn't use ELAN coprocessor ("N2 BGA") at all.

obviously, if running Naomi2 game ELAN required to game function and can not be "disabled"

I am using 23608B. my naomi 2 boots without the netdimm. once the netdimm is connected, the problem starts.

i bought the cap kit from console5. it replaces all the caps on the board. there is no difference after the cap change. i've replaced caps on all my arcade boards and consoles. on some consoles, the colors are deeper and sound are louder since the caps are refreshed with new quality ones.the capacitors on those might have been degraded. my naomi 2 graphics look a bit better i think because it looks more vibrant.
i thought the boot problem is caused by bad caps but there is no difference so it must have been another component on the board that has gone bad.
i run netdimm games using naochitri i bought from ebay. i tried booting the netdimm setup without the naochitri connected and it shows error 34 if it ever boots.
mostly it just black screens. only by luck the naomi 2 boots with the netdimm and i can play games on it which is why i dont think the gpu or elan is bad.
now i just keep my naomi 2 in storage and i hope i would be able to repair it one day. i might buy a new one in the future. thinking about it only 1 game is playable for me which is virtua fighter 4 as i only have the capcom io board so it's not on my priority list. i can play naomi and atomiswave games on my naomi 1.

I had this issue on my N2, it would happily play N1 games but not N2 ones, net even on netboot, it turned out that one of the GPU's was dead and it had kinda gone into "limp" mode and only used 1 gpu of the 2, hence it played N1 fine. took forever to troubleshoot, and eventually ended up with me getting another N2. your issue my be different, but just my 2 pence worth.
