How do Chihiro gun games work?

They work the same as previous Sega hardware. They use the IR EMITTERS around the bezel of the monitor for tracking. You can use an LCD no problem.

I also was under the impression that it are ir transmitters surrounding the screen.
The gun contains a very expensive sensor that goes to the gun board.
That board converts the sensor signal into 2 analog signals representing the gun x and y position on the screen.
Those analog signals go to the jvs board.
The gun sensor doesn't look like an ir transmitter at all.
I can check our hotd screen with my cellphone camera to see if any ir comes out of them.

this is 100% correct.

@nem is poking fun at me because every time Sega IR guns come up people mistakenly call the LED emitters around the screen "Sensors" and I yell at them for it :P

For anyone that's looking for more in-depth technical information you can find my thread here: Shooting Gallery: Sega Type-II IR on a 108" front projection setup.

I see. Sorry for missing the joke. Didn't knew it was the original post that was corrected...
