If I wanted to get a suicided CPS2 board to convert into the multikit, how would I identify that it is suicided? (rather than broken in some other way). Does a message appear on the screen when it boots up?

Solid colour screen, there's no other way to tell outside of inserting an EPROM burnt with Razoola's suicide tester
If the battery hasn't leaked, you get a solid colour screen and there's no obvious damage or corrosion, CPS2 is generally pretty reliable.
