Hi everyone,

I would like to ask if somebody knows if there is a way to play Midnight Resistance without a rotary stick.
Forgotten Worlds has a hack by Apocalypse and it seems there is a hardware hack for Cal .50. How about Midnight Resistance?
I bought the PCB without knowing it and getting a rotary panel is out of the question for me.

Could always hold out for a single rotary joystick, quite a few games depend on switch based position rotary (12 position) unlike Cal 50 which is optical rotary (24 position encoder).

Thanks, but as I said, I do not want to get a rotary stick.
 
There was an official joystick version dumped for this game recently by @ArcadePT

Midnight Resistance (World, set 2)

From mame:
// game reads positional buffers but discards the result and instead reads the rotation state from b3
// Press once for rotating clockwise, depress and press again for counterclockwise
// NB: this matches MD port B-1 control scheme
 
you could make a latch circuit to assert the switch code based on where the joystick was prior to being diagonal
so if you press up then right it will set the rotary input for the 1 o-clock position, but if you press right then up it will latch the 2 o-clock position etc.

or you could use a number of ways to convert a rotary encoder to generate the 24way output sequence

Is it playable? Rotary stick seems so much easier to play..

Most of the home computer conversions managed with a simple joystick so it should be playable, if not optimal. I had the C64 version as a kid, and that managed to be playable with a joystick with one fire button, (and possibly space bar for a second fire button, it's been a while!)

Yeah, c64 nut here too,just can't remember the game....only remember the good ones...or I'm getting old😅

It was a good conversion, highly rated. Bit of a PITA on cassette, better on disk ;)
 
Is the non-rotary version in MiSTer? That would be and easy way to check.

This game played great on the Genesis, so likely it will be fine, unless the difficulty was adjusted, then I don’t know!
 
I will tell you guys how good it is playable when I got the EEprom.
Should be fine though as stated above, all console and computer versions were without rotary.
 
It should be mame romset midres2 , i don't have a board / test setup around at the moment though.

It's possible the board had "mods" or a different PLD's etc, but from memory it was the regular single layer board.
