Hello everyone!

I'm looking for advice on powering my MVS cabinet. The original power supply is on deaths door. It's the original power supply so nothing janky, but the replacements are pretty hard to come by https://na.suzohapp.com/products/power_supplies/80-0072-00

I would prefer to keep the cabinet as stock as possible, but I play it almost every day and need a reliable, quick fix without resorting to anything jank.

I play around with old PCs, And have several high-quality ATX SeaSonic power supplies on hand. I'm considering desoldering the connectors from the old MVS power supply and wiring Molex and 24-pin connectors on the other end to make it easy to swap in ATX power supplies in the future if needed.

Do you think this would be fine? I know most people recommend using a switching power supply, but I’d rather use what I have on hand in bulk.

I'm also thinking about rebuilding the original power supply. I could temporarily use the ATX supply while I work on fixing the original one.

I've also been told that this is a direct drop in replacement, but in atx instead of xt https://www.gameroomguys.com/Dual-Switch-Power-Supply is that true? Looking at it it does look like it'd work out of the box, but wouldn't mount right.

Thanks for your input!

I would stick with an Arcade PSU rather than a PC PSU. Arcade PCBs require less rails (e.g. no 3.3V or -12V rail) and good arcade PSUs allow you to dial in the 5V rail while PC does not.

Your MVS cab can easily be modified to take any arcade PSU and not look jank; you just need to know what you're doing.

Hmm. I might just end up grabbing something like a Mean Well rt-125a unless there’s a better match out there, preferably something of good quality.

When you connect the fluorescent light and tube, do you just stack them together on the AC input of the arcade PSU? I want to make sure about that before I touch anything. Lol.
Edit: never mind, that will just always power the other stuff. How do people go about wiring the tubes and light? On the old power supply, it has a bypass for the AC that hooks up to the transformer and light.

This will probably end up being less janky than the ATX PSU because I forgot about the AC connections. That would have been messier.

Thanks for your time.

Okay, so I thought the cabinet was set up more like a modern PC power supply, but it very much isn't. I also thought the power switch in the front was 12 volts, but it's actually AC.

I don't usually work with cabinets, so this is my first time digging into one for a repair, and I'm figuring things out, lol. My cabinet has just kept trucking for years so I never needed to touch it.

My plan now is to recreate the original power supply using that Mean Well unit, some terminal blocks, and some other materials I have lying around.

I want to make a box that's about the same size as the original power supply that will bolt into the same place and have my Molex connectors come out of that just like it does in the OG.

I'll post pictures and updates in a month or so of what I come up with. :P
