Not sure why, but I've wanted a B System Puzzle Bobble ever since I found out it existed years ago. I recently bought a Quiz Sekai wa SHOW by shobai PCB for cheap since on paper, it appears to be the exact board that PB was "released" as for B System. It's the only other game with the electronic volume control, and appears to have all the same customs. I was hoping it would just be a rom swap. So anyway, I overwrote the original 2x P-ROMs (IC2 and IC18) and the S-ROM (IC27) with the ones from MAME for PB-BS since those were already EEPROMS. I'm using 27c800's for the other chips (IC9, IC14, IC15) since the data fits, doubling up where appropriate. Well, it boots to black screen, no audio, repeating click. The quiz game was tested working before I started. The original mask ROMs for the quiz game are 16 megabit, not 8 megabit like I'm using. I didn't have any 27c160's on hand, so I used the 800's instead. Anyone have ideas?

I did emulate a conversion in Mame and managed Puzzle Bobble to boot on the Quiz Sekai driver. But I had to do some patches, just a rom swap will not work. Could you share your graphics files so I can do a test with them?

Yes, no patch needed in that case because "Space Invaders DX" have identical memory mapping as Puzzle Bobble.

No, That is same as the one already on the "Quiz Sekai wa SHOW by shobai" PCB
Actually, 07 was different. I didn't check them all, but I assumed that could make a difference, so I dumped and reprogrammed 07, 09, and 10. The first issue is that my top3000 wouldn't read the older PAL16L8 chips for 05 and 06, so I replaced with GAL16V8's and burned the SIDX equivalents from the above link. The other issue is that SIDX doesn't have a 08 PLD chip like Quiz does. I tried to boot with it and without it. No luck in any event. Dumps for Quiz PLD's 07-10 attached.

I don't think I will be able to test that with Mame. Because Mame does not really use anything from the Pal. It's just there for "place holders". But I have been able to run the game with Patched Roms. If you want you can test them on your hardware and see if they work there too?

I included an alternate patch of rom "d72-13 (English).bin". It will display the instructions in Attract Mode in English...

Thanks very much. Does it matter which size EEPROMs I use? And should I go back to the Quiz PLDs instead of the SIDX?

I think you have to use the Quiz PLD's. I don't think so. As long they are at least as big as the original Puzzle Bobble ones. If my files are too big, just edit them in a Hex editor and cut from the end of the files. They are all padded with $FF at the end to match the size the Mame driver needed.

Getting closer. It boots to:

BACKUP DATA FAILED PUSH TEST SWITCH

white text with alternating grey and black screen. Pushing the test button on the PCB does nothing, nor does booting with it held.
