The past week we have a scammer actively targeting users with open WTB threads. They are sending these users a PM, telling them to email a person who has it.

In response to this, we take over the account and login as the scammer and send all the users a message to notify them this is a scam. We have seen a range of responses where people identify this as suspicious and reject dealing off the forums, but we also have users excitedly replying and saying thanks for the tip.

Here are some examples of the messages being sent:

So what can we do about this? The first step is reporting these messages using the built in report feature so we can shut this down as fast as possible.

This report button is on every conversation / private message, along with posts. This is the best way to let the admins and moderators know about the problem.

The three scam accounts we had this week were quickly reported by several of our outstanding users, so thank you to them for letting us know.

We have a couple ideas how to try and prevent this; there are all kinds of restrictions and hoops we can create -- but scammers will jump through them. We need to educate users as best we can. The leading idea I have so far is to have the conversation threads show a warning message when a new / low reputation user messages you with anything sus, like an email address. Still some more to think about, but hopefully we can implement some kind of solution shortly that doesn't make using the site more difficult for legit users.

I had a feeling this was a scam from the moment I got the PM. I wanted to see where it would lead so I contacted the email address the person provided. And the guy behind the email couldn't even provide photos of the item. It helps that there's not a lot of good photos of this item on the internet.

this kind of scam happened in my case last
summer . ive got suspicious when i was about to send the money and i asked pictures of the product . he sent me pictures tooked from
google andbive figure it out he tried to scam me 🤷🏻

Thanks for picking these up, I was a bit confused when I got message from the guy this morning :)

Damn, we need to be very vigilant about what we buy, specially if someone approaches us. Always ask for pictures and videos and don't paypal as Friends unless its from people that you know or have an outstanding reputation. Still in this case, ask for pictures.

Scammer messaged me after I already said I didn't need the item publicly on the thread over a week ago. They were definitely just copy and pasting down the line.

I had this happen on a different forum. They wouldn't send photos, and upon insistence sent me a picture of a box of Brazilian cereal. The persons excuses before this were being out of town, and their secretary not being able to locate the item in their office... It was an obscure paintball DVD...

I just reported a user who messaged me in April with the same kind of message
Had a gut feeling it was suspicious
Especially when they didn't follow up with an answer to a question I had

Very glad that brizzo is educating us members :D
I didn't even think to report it
Now I know better

I got two of these over the weekend! Appreciate you outlining the process. O thought it was odd that I would receive an offer from an account with no activity lol hmmm 🤔

Since the admin email was flagged already for the account should I report them in anyway?

It has been taken care of, but don't hesitate to click on report and send us a PM, so we can quickly ban the scammer.

The “silent failure” is a UX pattern that is not used enough by the Good Guys. Instead of TELLING the scammer that their comms have been blocked/deleted why not let them think their scam message has been sent, but silently delete it so it never gets delivered.
Can't jump through a hoop if they don’t know it’s there.
This in turn means other UX patterns to stop genuine comms being disappeared, but those are comparative easy to manage.

Scammers are getting desperate out there, they are looking for any type of market where they can steal a $.

Stay safe guys!

From time to time I like watching Jim Browning's youtube vids re scammers.

Some are pretty good, where they get the scammers raided.

That's always good to hear. It's too often that behaviour that would get police attention "IRL" just gets a shrug online.
It's frustrating that you often can't do anything, I have several break-in attempts a minute at our company servers, especially if we're in the news, and all I can do is install "fail2ban".

Might I make a suggestion that this topic be pinned somewhere here, especially for newer users? Would be good for everyone to have this for top of mind awareness. These forums are incredible when used responsibly & I’d hate for a few bad actors (read: scammers) to turn this place on its head.
