Sega Rally 2 and driving cabinet options

Hey everyone,

There's a dedicated Emergency Call Ambulance and Daytona 2 USA cabinet that I'm interested in. From what I can tell, all of them have their original components and I wanted to know:

1.) Assuming I have the full board stack for Sega Rally 2 [I guess the main + audio board], which cabinet would be the easiest to drop in and play? Daytona 2 or EAC cabinet?

2.) Would the motor and drive board be cross compatible with Sega Rally 2? The motor board appears to have the same exact part number when I look at all three manuals, but the drive board parts differ. Would it entail just a EPROM swap from EPR-19338A (EAC)/EPR-20985 (Daytona 2) to EPR-20512 (SR2) or you need a completely different drive board for that specific game (and possibly additional components)?

3.) Between both ECA and Daytona 2, would I have to change out the steering mechanism or could I just leave it as is?

tl;dr Which dedicated cabinet would be less of a headache to drop in and get SR2 running out the box?

ECA has an up and down shifter, Daytona 2 has the required 4-way. However, with ECA you could use the 4 to 2-way shifter adapter or just replace the shifter.

Sega Rally 2 has a handbrake too which both games lack, but it's easy to install in either cab.

Both are doable, Daytona 2 has the slight edge.

For the drive board, you just need to switch the eprom. Steering assembly is the same.

Thanks for the clarification, especially with cross compatibility in the main parts.

I’m going to check out both cabinets irl again then decide which one I want to pickup. Might lean towards the Daytona 2.

Ah jeez I totally forgot about this. Is that part a nightmare to find nowadays and was SR2 the only game that utilized this? I gotta check out the service manual again later.

I think SR2 is the only game that had the handbrake. You could just wire it up to a button while you wait for one to turn up.

Audio board also has different roms on it.

If you plan to switch the games sometimes I can recommend you the MultiFFB from Tibal so you won't have to change the rom on the drive board.

That's actually a great point. Daytona 2 already has the DSB2, Emergency Call Ambulance does not.

If I remember correctly the DSB1 and the DSB2 boards use different plugs for power but with same pinout. May need to build an adapter there.

I am doing the same on a Scud Race twin to play various Model 3 racers (bought it from a friend like that). Can do some pictures later of what was done if interested.

I’d be interested to see whenever you have a chance. Trying to keep my options open.

The Daytona 2 would be the easiest to convert to SR2 as it has the DSB2/loom and the 4 way shifter (although you'd still need a dedicated SR2 DSB2 board or change the ROMs inside the DSB2 cage to get the required music).

Bear in mind though you might want to check out the cabs in person (or get detailed photos) as many original Daytona 2 cabs in the US were 'upgraded' to ECA. So the ECA cab may have a DSB2/loom and 4 way shifter still fitted from its previous incarnation as a Daytona 2. Daytona 2 to ECA was an official Sega upgrade - there's even an option in the ECA service menu to use either 4 way or up/down shifter to account for this.

For the handbrake you could wire it to a separate button or if you're lucky, like me, you could source a SR2 handbrake and seat base and fit that to whichever cab you end up with.

I did this on one side of my Daytona 2 twin..

The steering/FFB setup is the same on Daytona 2/SR2/ECA, but you will need to change the ROM on the drive board as the Daytona 2/ECA and SR2 versions are different - SR2 with FFB is unplayable with the Daytona 2 ROM.

All this is basically the same in order to play Scud Race/Super GT - although it uses the older DSB1 board for music, you can use the DSB2 filter board to connect the DSB1 board.
