I am trying to ship a monitor from CA to WA and would like to know the safest way to do so without risking damage in transit.

Do you guys have any suggestions about the best way to do so?
 
Best way is to load it in your car and haul it yourself.

but what monitor is it, does it have a frame? Bare tube?
 
Tube, frame, Chassis.

I would rather pay for safe packing than drive for a 42 hour round trip.

Any suggestions on “Shipping” it safely would be appreciated.
 
None of the conventional companies are going to touch them, so cross UPS, FedEx and UPS off the list. I think you're only way would be to build a box to mount the monitor.in and then palletize the box. Then use a shipper like STI. Fastenal works too, but they're turning away lots of arcade related stuff nowadays due to claims issues.
 
If you do manage to get UPS, USPS, or FedEx to take it by trying to trick them, it won't be insured. And last time I tried to get FedEx to ship a monitor it was almost freight prices for a 26" anyway. :/

Yeah, as DZ said your only real option is mount it in a wooden box and then crate that. And then freight it. STI, find a friend already making the trip, you can try uShip but you never know what you're getting exactly.

You can also try reaching out on KLOV and see if anyone is making that trip, they have a section dedicated to transportation.
 
Not sure what greyhound's max size/weight is... but if it's a crated monitor they might be a cheaper alternative? They can do actual delivery or just station to station freighting.

If I was concerned with safety I would do as others have suggested and mount it into a wooden crate and palette. I moved a monitor from san jose to san francisco in a moving truck just strapped down to a palette. It was a tube/chassis/frame deal so it wasn't hard to secure the frame to the palette with some strapping. But that was only an hour on the highway.
 
Anyone want to drive a monitor from sacramento back to KC in LA for me? Been waiting 2 months, not sure if he is ever coming to pick it up lol.
 
Im going to Disneyland next week so I may be able to meet the buyer.

if not I would use the same company SNK NEO GEO turned me onto whne I transported my x2 Mitsibishi XC3725C.

I have also sent Plant tissue culture laminar hoods from DC to Bellingham through Diamond line transport and they have a careful packaging division.

Build a crate.

Get some decent wood. Build a small pallet for the chassis to rest on, and then pad the bottom before you place the monitor down. Be sure to support the back so that it’s level.

Wrap the hell out of the monitor, and build the crate around it. Use some decently solid plywood around all four sides and pack it densely. You could even use the self expanding foam packs.

Find a freight company and cross your fingers lol
 
That sounds like a bad idea, honestly. You're inviting it to shake and shimmy around that way. You want to mount it to a wooden frame using the existing mounting points just as if it were in a cab. Then build the crate around that. The monitor will move with the crate rather than inside it.
 
I’ve seen some monitors with weak or non existent mounting points, so the self expanding foam does as good of a job, if not better, when I’ve seen it used :) it gets a ton of use in computer chassis when pre-builts are shipped.

Obv there is no perfect way unfortunately
 
That self expanding foam stuff works for sure. I'd missed that line.

I wouldn't trust any other type with it floating in there.
 
As suggested, build a wooden box and crate. Use the existing mounting points by drilling holes /w nuts and bolts. I support the necks with closed cell foam, which I always have kicking around from other electronics purchases as you can cut them to size using a simple bread knife.
 
the original packaging method was to have the tube facing down onto a piece of specially shaped polystyrene,
and then the whole thing has surrounded by polystyrene sheets and boxed in a very strong box.

it still needs to be shipped by a specialist company that knows not to tip it over, stack it or beat the crap out of it.
