...when, after a couple of days staring at the board for broken traces, you're finally tracing the sound problem with the schematics and you "find the problem" ! 
for posterity: on Nba Jam, no sounds from roms U12 and U13 would play but U3 was playing fine.
putting in (a socket!) the TL084N obviously fixed the problem.
