Anyone have a spare they are willing to part with before I buy it online elsewhere? Aliexpress seems to be 150 now and ebay is 170.

$150 US with express shipping and all the accessories (Ali) is pretty darn good.

People sell second hand ones for more than that!

For my first assembled DVI (1.5 no audio version) OSSC I think it was over 220$ shipped?
Considering you are getting a better design (all 1.6 versions have included HDMI audio) for about 100$ less... Go for new. ;)

The OSSC is a fantastic device, but just remember for most people the limiting factor is still the display.
If your LCD/OLED/Plasma/whatever can't sync ranges outside of 60.0hz (say 58~62) its NOT going to display a great number of things from the OSSC.
Two quick examples that have given others trouble...

SNES, runs at 60.1hz
R-Type, runs at 58.8hz

The games/family that gives almost everyone trouble (basically you'll also need a iScan DVDO VP30/50/50Pro to use as a sync/frame buffer)...

Midway Y/T/Wolf Units (Mortal Kombat, MK2, MK3, Rampage World Tour, Smash TV, etc etc)

Finally remember that if a Taito F3 is in your future, you'll also need to use a special HD15 connector to feed the OSSC's VGA port (it will not sync via SCART port like everything else).

Thanks for all the info. Just wanted to throw it out there in case anyone was thinking about getting rid of it before I send my money to some random person.

Which components are poor? Specifically, which ones? Why are they poor, can you tell me the brand used or provide any proof of said poor components?

Just curious as I have an Ali unit and it's assembled to a high standard with quality components, and works flawlessly.

  1. RetroRGB Bod mentioned something about the Aliexpress and he mentioned a few things which were inferior which I forgot what they were but he recommended to buy the original or directly from the creator.

1. The PSU is of low quality. The negative pole of the power jack has 65VAC in it (compared to earth), suggesting lacking isolation (the PSU we sell is much, much better in this regard). This can be easily felt with a finger and is highly un-optimal for an analogue video application and could be dangerous in some situations.

2. The quality of the PCB is lacklustre – it has rough edges and solder mask partially missing from some traces.

3. The RGB/YPbPr input has not been inserted into the PCB all the way (at least on the unit we evaluated), causing the PCB to bend when the case is assembled and the screws tightened.

4. The manual is a blatant rip-off (from VideoGamePerfection.com), with a false claim of copyright, no less.

5. The bottom sticker with the CE and WEEE logos tells to ask for support from videogameperfection.com! Obviously we will not honour any guarantees nor provide any servicing or technical support for these units. If they break down on you, don’t come to us! Our units are also properly audited for RoHS/WEEE and comply with EU laws relating to electrical safety and recycling, there is little chance that the bootleggers actually bothered with this.

6. Most of the units come with one months warranty. As they are shipped from China they aren’t legally required to provide any more. All VGP units come with 12 months warranty.

7. VGP pays a donation to Marqs (the creator of OSSC) for each OSSC batch produced to help fund OSSC development and exciting future products. As you probably have guessed, no such donation is made when one of these units is sold.

As far as we know, all re-sellers are currently selling these inferior units. That includes the so-called Kaico model and any other re-brandings. The only exception we know of is one re-seller based in Australia, who is hand soldering his own.

You're just regurgitating the writings of someone else. That doesn't constitute proof of anything.

Points 1 to 3 definitely aren't true in my experience.

Points 4 and 5 are valid.

Points 6 and 7 are questionable. The seller I purchased from offers a 12 month warranty. Until recently no donation was made to Marcus from VGP unless it was from the purchaser's pocket.

P.s. It's not a bootleg product and VGP are not the creators of the device. I think enough people are reading between the lines now but I will still mention this.

Either way, competition has been a good thing. VGP have lowered their price and are seemingly looking into upping their packaging standards. :)

I'm also skeptical of these claims of "bootlegs" and "inferior" components.

I want to support VGP because I know and like them, so that's what I'll do. Nothing more nothing less.

Respect.

Definitely support VGP; just don't unjustifiably drag down a 'competitor'. That's all I'm saying.

If you followed the golden age of Grand Prix, this scenario loosely reminds me of the Senna / Prost rivalry. Point being, Prost didn't care if you liked Senna as long as that didn't come at the expense of disliking him.
