I can't find any info why this should be necessary in my case. I'm using my Naoimi 1 netboot set with FW 3.03 and 21578H EXP bios to load games, not interested in using a CF to load games. And if I should upgrade, than to wat FW version?

If you're going to update the firmware I see no reason not update to 4.02 as AFAIK every new firmware only added additional functionality and bug fixes to the last.

here's the basic breakdown:
1.xx standard dim board
2.xx ALL.net functionality introduced
3.03 net boot functionality introduced (some compatibility issues)
3.17 full net-boot functionality
4.01 CF functionality introduced
4.02 modification of 4.01 firmware to support unofficial CF setups

I used 3.03 forever on my NAOMI 1. Never had an issue. Eventually I updated it to 4.01 when I got a NAOMI2 because a NAOMI2 game wanted the newer firmware.

just for 'fun' I did an update via 4.01 to 4.02. Why not and it makes the Net-dimm even more versatile.

Unless you have the dimm upgrade GD-Rom there's no easy way to upgrade from 3.03 to 3.17 - but you can netboot upgrade to 4.01 which is the latest official firmware available, 4.02 is a hack to allow any CF-Card to work.

Unless you want to use CF-Cards instead of GD-Roms the only reason to upgrade is VF4-FT needs a higher version (I think it needs >=3.17) as you can netboot with the version you have.

Personally I'd still upgrade from 3.03 to 4.01 just for the few GD-Rom games that need newer firmware.
