What's new

Y unit pld's

well i need to fix mk2 and high impact.
i wonder which pld's are universal?
i'm pretty sure the info in mame is wrong about what they all do!

then maybe it's mk, i know it's the same board because i only got them to try to make a strikeforce conversion!

Do you need these PLDs for the conversion?

There's actually quite a few differences in the PCBs particularly the sound boards. While they're all "Y-units" they all use unique board revisions. Not just in the silk-screened number (of which there are 4-different Y-Unit board versions) but they seem to have factory wire hacks that make them unique as well.

I recall I bought a High Impact sound board to use as a replacement on a non-working smash TV only to discover it was essentially incompatible even though it was the "Same board"

Assuming you can manage the PCB differences the biggest challenge is getting around the protection chip.

I actually started cataloging these differences here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/187hDbbW7TGaGQd30-FcVxwTrSuexIaEoCB7RrBjhKyA/edit?usp=sharing

i dont think have the sound board!
i did get the game running, but never finished the patches - i had palet issues if i remember right.
but it probably didnt help that i was using a blend of pld's to get a running board!!!

that goog link dont work. :)
use a damned pdf like normal people ;)

sorry, link updated.

use a damned pdf like normal people
No Thanks.
? why would I want to re-export and re-upload every-time I make a change when I can just use an online spreadsheet and have the changes visible instantly, or open it up to allow other editors?

I've got an original Strike force PCB and I started a new tab in the spreadsheet with the PLD Numbers and jumper settings. There doesn't appear to be any factory wirehack on Stirkeforce either.

there's no easy way to specify wire hacks in text so for now I'm just putting a count so people can understand how many to look for in photos.

there where no hacks on any of the boards i have or have seen.
i dont know why there are so many variations of oscillator/jumper config though.
you would think there is just 15 or 24KHz video and the cpu would just run at it's safe limit.

to my knowledge none of these boards support 24KHz

I have every Y-Unit board except for Trog and High Impact. Strike Force seems to be the only Y-unit game in my collection without wires added to the PCB from the factory.

do the wired ones also have tracks cut??

as for medium-res, i'm sure something could do it - narc maybe.
but i did all this so long ago that it was on a different computer so i dont have the manuals, notes or rom-patches on hand.
there is also an unfinished patch by someone else to give strikeforce defender style control instead of the 8way stick. :)
i really need to gather all my arcade shit onto one drive!
maybe get someone with better bandwidth than me to up a lot of it to mega or something! :)

NARC is medium res only, but it's also not on Y-Unit hardware; it's on Z-Unit hardware.

I haven't looked closely enough, but it's definitely factory as every photo I've seen of these boards online also has the wire hacks in place.
I'm curious which boards of yours don't have them. I'd like to compare to mine.

You said you had High Impact and MK

Poking around online High Impact appears to have some wire hacks on the bottom of the PCB. Note the 3 green wires

It looks like MK1 shipped on both "Rev B" PCBs WITH wire hacks and "Rev C" PCBs WITHOUT wire hacks
Note the Yellow Wires on Rev B:

well my mk was clean,
my high impact may have lost them - when i got it i paid 5$ and it looked like it had been stored outdoors!!!
infact i paid beer money for both with the sole intention of fixing one and trying to convert it! :D

that does get me thinking,
i wonder if the schematics are correct, or printed before the mods!

that's a good question.

it does seem though, that in the case of MK they removed the need for the wire hacks with the next PCB revision. perhaps that's the same with other games?

makes sense - provided they discovered the issue before making too many boards.
i wonder if the schems have the board revision on them?
i'll have to go download some again.
