What's new
If you're using a JPAC and an HDMI to VGA converter was involved, I'm fairly certain that whatever signal you fed into the Astro City was either scaled, interlaced, or both (can MiSTer even output low res via HDMI? I'd have to check... *EDIT: A dumb question if I thought about it... I use a JAMMA Expander which connects via HDMI so the answer is yes). If any of that happens it tends to look pretty bad on 15khz monitors.

If you used the analog IO board of the MiSTer to connect the NNC, it will usually (but not always) output the same signal as the original console/arcade board, so you can expect the NNC to look pretty good.

Done correctly, direct_video via HDMI offers superior image quality.
Direct video is amazing! I don’t see a need for the analog board. To top it off you can change mister ini on the fly by making alts and directional inputs to control your video feeds. Very versatile.

I wonder if it wasn't something to do with the specific hdmi/vga converters I have then? On my NNC I feel like an IO board is producing better colors. On my direct video I always felt like my trisync was slightly dim in the whites and just not as vibrant. Swapping over to an IO board and the color purity feels better to me.

Weird!

If I were a betting man I’d say it’s the converters? There is an ongoing issue with the analog IO producing lower gains causing brightness issues.

Here’s a comparison between Analog IO and Direct Video:

This is exactly why I created the VGA (RGBs) -> Genesis 2 adapters, to use with hd Retrovision component cables, for both my MiSTer setups.

The image quality is far superior to standard component output (IMO).

I know I've said this (in this thread) in the past but the topic keeps coming up.

The RGBs signal coming out of the io board is BRIGHT. I used 390ohm resistors on the R,G,B lines to get it perfect.

Great video! Would you say FB Neo is hardware dependent? Faster CPU’s would be much more accurate than lower end SBC’s? I wonder what the minimum CPU specs would be to have “accurate” emulation compared to original and MiSTer.
Final Burn Neo is potato compatible. Specs are an i3 and a GPU. Non specific. I say device dependent because I never know if someone watching the video is going to try to use Neo with 30+ Chrome tabs open and some other background shit that'll destroy their experience

Haha yea. I imagine by now most folks running on modern setups are ok.

Wowzers, the X68000 core has come a long way since I first looked at it... definitely worth your time for some ChoRenSha.

Generally have audio issues on some games, even lack of audio, it's still pretty rough but it'll get there like all things MiSTer!

Here's a rough setup guide:

DOWNLOAD THESE FILES: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/X68000_MiSTer/tree/master/releases

Copy *.rbf to the "_computer" directory on your SD card.
Copy boot.rom and boot3.vhd to games/X68000 folder
Add your games to games/HDF folder

For those using a MiSTercade or playing this on a CRT you'll need to add this line to the end of your MiSTer.ini file too.

[X68000]
vsync_adjust=3
video_mode=320,16,32,16,240,4,3,16,6048
vga_scaler=1

Neat, thanks for the guide and link, gotta get this up and running when I get the chance. Been craving some ChoRenSha, and I'm sure it'll look great on my PVM!

Got my Mister set up but having problems getting my controller to work. Attempting on using a retrobit Saturn wireless controller. I set up the controller in both the main menu and the sub menu. Not sure if the settings not sticking or what. Still I was able to load Dodonpachi and mess around with some settings! How cool is that.

a real 16 bit showcase showdown
What the hell happened to the sound on #1 for Super Castlevania? :pompous: The lows are completely clipped and sounds awful. Could it have been how you recorded it in capture with overexposed volume? Based on the color in the vid, I'd say it's Mister and sounded inferior to #2, Bsnes but my guess is it's most likely a video capture/editing issue.

I'm wearing headphones so any differences in the audio are like very apparent.
