You can boil the old one out and fit the new one back in and epoxy it back to make it original

UPL made the mistake of using a old z80 and the z80 was supposed to be pressed against the metal so that the metal could provide a heat drain to it. But if u boil it out you will find thst nothing is touching the metal at all and that the the epoxy causes a insulator instead.. this was the weakest point in this pcb. I did mine with a faster and more reliable z80 and made sure that the cpu was thermal pasted to the ceiling of the cpu block then wiried the legs to a socket with the PLD encrypted device. Im pretty sure this was what was intended.

Yes, whatever potting compound they used was most likely acting as an insulator. The one that is installed now on the board has been rock solid.

It would have been fine if the z80 was themal pasted onto the metal but it was not. But thats if you wanted to keep it original.

100% it was only heat that killed it

Its also my top 10 favourite game.. thats saying a lot. I know quite a few people that would agree too..
