What's new
(Crossposted from another thread.)

Hey, guys. So I've done some research into this subject, and I've discovered that a lot of TVs contained similar tubes that would be suitable donors for the later bezel design curvature found inside the Blast City, Net City, and Windy II; that is, to match the cruvature of the original Toshiba A68KZN696X.

Compatible tubes based on curvature: Samsung A68QBT892X and Thomson A68AGA20X, LG-Philips A68QBC230X

Curvature is is 5mm off on corners: Daewoo-Orion A68KTB259X & A68KTB359X.

I have found these tube models in the same sets, so this confirms their interchangeability!

Apex AT-2702 and AT-2708: (There is also a dark gray version of this model with the same tube.)

Possible donors may be found in some 27" Samsung, Sharp, Sanyo, RCA, and Toshiba models. (This is just speculation.)

I've seen the brand in Europe, but that particular model is likely US only.

29" (27" US) is very rare in Europe. Everything was 28" here. The only exception is Sony, but that doesn't really help anyone who wants to do a tube swap.

My experience is curve matching donors from domestic TV's suitable for the MS293x are quite easily found. But about 30% of them will have bonded yokes which makes them not suitable for a swap. Here is what I would do to save some misery of purchasing a used TV taking it home only to find out it won't work:
  1. Check for a bonded yoke
    • Bring a big jacket or small blanket with you along with a bright flashlight
    • If you are out in bright light when deciding to purchase the TV, drape the jacket/blanket over the TV and shine the light down through the vents in the back of the TV
    • You want to see convergence rings towards the end of the neck
    • If you don't, walk away.
    • The tube has a bonded yoke and won't work
  2. Check for screen curve fitment. It is impossible to eyeball this. I've thought many times I picked up a screen curve compatible donor, only to take it home to find out it is way off.
    • Using the bezel, of preferably a Net City as there is no ridge on that bezel as it touches the tube, create a jig using cardboard so that you can ensure that curve of your prospective TV is a match
    • Tape the cardboard to the bezel
    • Trace out the jig with a penon the other side of the bezel and cut it out with a knife or scissor
    • Do it for both the length and width
    • Put the bezel pack on your cab and test the jig on your cab and make sure it works
    • If you have an MS9, test it there as well. It shouldn't work
    • Take the jig with you as you travel to scout out donor swap candidates
Should save you the trouble of buying a TV taking it all the way home and finding out it doesn't work fitment-wise. Also, if you have a tube that is a fitment compatible donor, you likely will have to reverse mount the tube behind the frame or use washers to close the gap between tube and bezel or allow it to fit with proper assembled bezel closure.

FYI, I am about to try a swap for an MS2933 in the next couple of days, will report back what I find.

Oh, by the way. That Apex tube that you were using as a donor a couple years ago. Did you ever dial in the convergence and purity on it? We never got to see the end result.

The hitachi ms9 tube found in alot of 90's racing cabs and maybe early time crisis(not sure) is a good candidate for the blast tube replacement. The pitch is a little rounder in the center but as far as gaps theyre less than 2mm depending on how many spacers you use when reverse mounting. This is mine with 2 spacers

Updated my post regarding CRT Tvs with compatible tubes.

This is a little bit off-topic, however I have a couple of MS2933 monitors with tubes that are in use daily. I'm currently on the hunt for backups, however I do have 2x WG D9200 monitors. from checking the threads here, it looks like both have a B10-277 neck. So the questions I have are:

Can I Yoke-swap an MS2933/A68KSM696X onto an A68AEG25X tube? Will it look good if it works? Does anyone know if the curvature is a close fit?

Got a couple on our latest container with cracked tubes, and then my personal tube went crack today. Since someone mentioned the 27A37 fit I Took a gamble on a dirt cheap Toshiba 27A41 with a Philips A68AJB82X10 and unfortunately the curvature is wrong. Fits the Astro MS9 bezel though so we'll keep it around.

Will be actively on the hunt for a handful of swap candidates so will keep you folks updated!

EDIT: picked up a Durabrand DWT2704B today. Everything I could find screamed Funai OEM, got it home and sadly Orion OEM. Tube Orion A68KTB359X05, curvature is about 5mm off on the corners. Damn, but at least it was free.

I ended up swapping in that Orion tube just to get the cab running again. Bezel fitment does have gaps which I used foam weather seal to fill--though it could be improved by changing out the spacers. The geometry is great and the tube has hugely better emissions than the tired old Toshiba; all in all it displays a great image, and I have no problems keeping it in the cab until I stumble across the correct replacement locally.

We also have an F355 DX at the shop with 3 working but severely burned MS2931 monitors, and the face curvature doesn't matter so much since they're behind glass and we removed the horrible bezels anyway. Will be keeping an eye out for more of these to swap in.

Picked up another one of these Durabrands, this time the guy told me the model was DU2701. It was free so I picked it up. When I arrived, I saw it was Orion again and disappointingly took it home. Opened it up and...

M68LWF088X50

Monitor grade, Orion branding, Panasonic tube... in a literal Wal-Mart TV

Well ok then. Unfortunately like the JVC D series someone mentioned earlier, it's too flat and has gaps in the center. However M grade is very tempting.
