I tried with 2 Vewlix cabs, using a DVI (Vewlix) to VGA (Naomi) adapter- no picture (monitor is a 4K upgrade). The audio makes a loud, rapid clicking noise. Power connected with the 2 molex connectors from Vewlix. Is this a recognised problem? The Naomi isn't faulty as it works in a Net City. Do Naomis work in Vewlix cabs?

Many thanks!

Have you measured the voltages coming out of those JVS power plugs? Since you are in good old blighty then you are using a step down transformer, correct? If it’s not rock solid 100V the wei-ya jvs power supply will start oscillating 12V which can potentially affect the sound, as amplifiers are generally run on 12v. What are you using for amiplification?

i wouldnt attempt running it in there unless you are sure the voltage levels are good and stable. Also there is a jumper which converts between running 15khz or 31khz. It’s unlikely the monitor will support 15 khz and these days even 31khz on a modern monotor might not be a given. Perhaps double check the naomi jumpers and the monitors acceptable video signal ranges

Thanks. Yes using a transformer. I've got the sound plugged directly into the Vewlix, no external amplifier. Set to 31kHz. I'm going to check the monitor as it's a 4K upgrade with DVI and HDMI inputs.

@zetsurin
I checked the output voltages in the 2 JVS power plugs- they are fine. The audio clicking with Naomi is occasional. I may replace the 110V transformer with a 100V later, as I'm sure that's the issue as you say. I took the monitor out- it's a modern 4K LG with 2 HDMI and 1 DP socket- no VGA! So I had to use an OSSC with the Naomi, and now it works. Works directly with DVi to HDMI lead for Lindbergh and Taito X2. In hindsight, it's not worth the hassle having a 4K upgrade when you buy a Vewlix. Not just for VGA/analogue input (as the LG only handles digital), but also for rotating the monitor.

I had a simulor issue when I upgraded my house of the dead sdlx to a new flat screen with no vga input. The problem is that you can use hdmi or dvi with a passive adapter on an vga input, but it's not working the opposite way. I had to buy an vga to hdmi adapter which also needs 5volt. I took the 5 volt from my io board cause there was already plugged my raspberry pi for netboot to the Naomi cn12 power out. Now it's working perfect.

The other issue was the seller added a subwoofer, but this degraded the audio badly so I removed it and connected direct to the Vewlix. Works great now. Learning is to buy unmodified!

Any subwoofer recommends, or shall I just leave as is?

Re the Vewlix audio 'clicking' again (when connected to Naomi etc). It seems to be related to input voltage, as the transformer is 110V connected to the JVS PSU. The top LED is flashing (next to VR3 pot, for the mains input)- left-sided on the photo (JVS Wei Ya Power Supply PSU Vewlix). As it's an input, what do I measure with a voltmeter? I've ordered a 100V transformer to try to fix this, assuming input voltage is the problem. I've turned the pot dial and nowhere does it work.

Worked the pots out. Left is +12v, middle +3.3v, right +5.25v. All voltages checked and fine, but left LED flashed with Naomi or Taito F3 connected, with audio 'pulsing' matching the LED frequency. LED doesn't flash when there is no load. So has to be the input voltage (measured at 113v).

If those PSUs don't get exactly 100V, they do all kinds of crazy shit until they fail spectacularly a short time later. They're extremely picky and a pain in the ass to deal with. Don't try to run it with 110V.

Yeah no at least my Naomi 2 is very picky with power. You’ll want to get it on the dot before you look at other issues.

It's not the Naomi 2 at fault here, it's the cheap-ass Wei-Ya PSU that comes standard in the Vewlix. It'll do strange shit on the 12V line if it gets anything over 100V in. This kills the Naomi 2, or whatever board you have plugged in at the time.

Received 2 lovely Airlink 100V stepdown transformers today- hopefully will solve the problem.

I went for the most powerful of the smallest form factor, that will easily fit in the 2 Vewlix cabs I have (one horizontal, one tate). 500W. Great price too for the build quality, and made in UK. Took 2 days to arrive via FedEx, which was a pleasant surprise.

To close this off, I swapped the transformers to 100V ones, and all works now. Thanks for the advice guys.

Hope you didn't damage that Naomi 2 running it without a stepdown.
I cooked the audio amp on a MVS board, you see the 12v line fluctuates wildly without a stepdown... Ranging/pulsing 12~18 volts.
If the audio section fails suddenly (assuming Naomi uses 12v for audio like other boards) I wouldn't be shocked/surprised.

NEVER run arcade boards without verifying voltage first (we've all made the mistake)!

I had a 110V stepdown, but got the pulsing with anything connected to the JVS power plugs. This stopped with the 100V stepdown transformer. Love the old-school metal case of the Airlink, and its reassuringly heavy. Quality :)

Naomi 2 is fine (for now..)!
