The smoke in the rubber grip on the shifter is a non-issue now because I decided to dissect the grip and remove the rubber altogether. I found some cheap shifter knobs for real cars on eBay and will be affixing one to this shifter. The silver lining to this story is that I might end up with a pretty cool custom shifter that matches the yellow theme my OR2SP cab has going.
