What's new
Hi all, apologies for my absence, I've been really busy of late, I've started a new job this year and have no time for dev work at the moment, hopefully things will settle down soon and I can release some more updates for WiPi I was working on and look at updating the image code to support the latest releases.
I used to do a lot of PHP development in my past career, I don't mind going through your code and cleaning up all the PHP warnings and submit PR into your repo. Is accepting PRs something you're open to accepting?

After 2+ years of the wipi netbooting working, I encountered an oddity, where once I re-booted I got into the Wipi right as the AP showed on my phone, quickly went over to a game, launched it, and it got 26% done, and the whole thing shut down, I see the Network Port light go out, and no activity on the other side, just a red light... (Ras-Pi4), it seems to run, turn the AP on, and then within 1-2 Minutes just turn everything off, and shut down... I need to drag a PC monitor over and see what it's doing, but it's super odd that it was letting me connect, log in, access the game list and then just power down... At first I thought the Pi was bad, now I'm going to re-flash the image to the SD, but I'm just stumped as if the SD got corrupted I would expect to see nothing if it couldn't boot. So super odd... (No I didn't have the Power Saver On, even if I did it should be 10 minutes not 2) super odd...

I'm still not 100% Certain, but a couple of things, when I had the issue initially I had patched the Pi to the latest version, When I then Re-Imaged the SD, from a download 6-1-4 I believe, I then tried to turn on both Open JVS, and Power Save, and it did the same thing (I also didn't have the O-JVS hat attached) I then re-imaged the SD a third time, this time left it at default and was able to get the game to load / run, which was my objective as I wanted to check out a new CP for a game. So I haven't gone back and tried either of those options to see if the issue returns, and possibly I should try one at a time. To see if I can find out which or neither is causing this.

Also I'm powering the PI, through the header Pins, so that may also be part of the issue, but like I said it's been fine for years... and is running like that again... and was able to upload the game using the header pins for power.

It's a good San-Disk CF, and The Pi is working well for now, as it was able to upload the file to the Net-Dimm, what the underlying issue is at this point I can't say. If I find it, I'll comment and someone familiar with the code can possibly look at it and see if it's an actual bug, or just me turning things on (JVS) that I don't have installed yet.

I do want to turn on the Power Saver, as I typically only change games right on startup, and I have a battery backup attached to the Net-Dimm that keeps the ram powered for up to a week without ac power (Motorcycle Battery with a step down converter from 12v - 7.2v, and an trickle charger so it can run indefinitely, just not more than 5-6 days without any AC) So having the Pi is really only for changing games.

If you restart the Pi and log in as root, you can run the "dmesg" utility to see what happened. If you had an SSH session open to the Pi, you'd see the shutdown command started. This happens when there's an under-voltage event and the system shuts itself down. The PWR LED should always be on. If it's not, the Pi is already running in under-voltage.

Hello Fellow enthusiasts,

What’s the latest and greatest to hook up a touch screen lcd screen to the wipi?

Although I like choosing games via the browser on your phone, tablet, pc, laptop, …
I think having an actual dedicated touch screen lcd to select the games is more convenient.

In my humble opinion: The touch screen menu is the worst way to select games, since the menu is not really optimized for small screen. I guess you always could use one of those 7"-10" Touchscreens (but i guess those need some reconfiguration before working)

I first used an old ipad to select the games. Currently i only use the OSD Menu, since that project is the latest method to start games (With config injections etc). Did you have a look at the OSD?

Another method would be using NFC cards :)

Hope this helps

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

I have not looked at the OSD yet and did not know that you can make cards to stat different games. Would that mean you need to created all those different cards to start each game?

- For the nfc cards you need a NFC Reader (should be around 20 USD) and some NFC cards - For each game you want to start you need one card. Cards can be written within the wipi gui - I think it is a nice option for a few selected games. There are nice 3D prints available.
- The OSD is superior, since it is the latest solution to launch games faster / with preconfigured Setup-Settings. Please understand that the OSD is not only a nice menu but a different projects with a different kind of launching games - Watch this Video for Details :)

@Orakelschaf,

What?! This is so cool. I especially love the aspect that you can get into the settings of each individual game to setting coin managment and the controls.

I know this video you shared with me is from 2 years ago. Has the launcher reached its final version already?

In need to install this.

Do you have the tutorial for this?

You can just check the readme of this project - its already part of it

The OSD is part of the WiPi Image. You enable it and decide if you want to always load it. Imagine it as a Game which is loaded to the noami, but instead of a game you get a nice OSD. Be aware that not all OSD Game settings are "translated", since that takes time to figure out. - Regarding your question about "final version": It runs damn well and could need some updates, but i wouldn't call it beta either.

If you run the current version of WiPi you already got the OSD. Just enable it :)

Hello everyone,

I checked the wipi version and I am on 6.1-4.

I was able to change it to on screen menu, however when I power down the system and turn it back on, the naomi boots back to the last loaded game. I have then disconnected the Ethernet cable and connected the pi to the router. It get a message that there is no internet connection.

What can I do to get the osd menu running and how can I update the wipi?

  • Check the Instruction Manual - There is a Link in the official Github (scroll down to the text) - Read Page 3 - There is an explaination how to setup the OSM (i called i OSD) for being available on reboot
  • It is good to slowly read through that manual, here are a lot of hidden gems/information in there :)

If you want to connect your Pi and Naomi and tablet to the Internet:
  • get a small switch (5 port cheap one will do)
  • connect your internet (from another switch, your router, whatever your configuration is) to that switch
  • connect your pi to that switch
  • connect your netdimm to that switch (be sure to use a normal catcable, not a crossover one)
  • if that switch has lights, check if the lights show up on powering on both devices - the netdimm self has no leds on the network port
  • by using a small switch in this configuration you can disconnect your internet from that switch without breaking connection between the pi and the netdimm
  • set a static ip address, of your home network to both netdimm and the pi, configure gateway and dns in the pi
  • after successfully configuration and connecting the device you don't need that wipi only wifi - you can connect directly to the ip of the pi in your browser
  • After that you update the wipi, openjvs, openffb
  • Just ask away if this is not clear (you can even PM me with questions if you like)

@Orakelschaf
Thank you very much for your help.
My Naomi is powered externally, so I believe I need to enable the replay mode.

In regards to updating the Wipi, instead of connecting the Wipi and the Netdimm to a switch and then to my router, could not just connect the Wipi via WiFi to my home networ? Will this allow me to update the Wipi?

I will continue to fiddle around with it.

@Orakelschaf

Yeah, WiFi worked and I was able to update the Wipi to 6.1-9.2.

I also enabled the OSM and changed it to replay mode.

Then I set the Wipi back to hotspot mode. I am still not able to see the OSM when I boot up the Naomi. It still boots up the last game.

Now I am not able to log back into wipi netbooter and just times out.

How can I reconnect to the Wipi?
