On Chihiro and Triforce, all linking communication is done over a network switch in the stock configurations, right? Maybe Lindbergh is the same way? Would it be possible to set up some kind of private server that would allow us to play multiplayer online?

I remember back in the XBOX days there were servers and PC software you could use that would make the XBOX think it was using LAN.

I think NAOMI/NAOMI 2 get a little more complicated since they do more than just communicate over LAN, using optical cables, so they might not be a candidate for this option.

People have done it with San Fran Rush and other Midway/Atari games that user ethernet linking: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=168323

I would suspect the biggest roadblock is if they prevent you from connecting if the ping is too high. IIRC a number of Xbox 360 titles did this to prevent people from using the LAN option for online play...
