I really want to start picking up all those free curbside projection TVs locally, check them up, then remove and store the projection unit for future use.
Like for restoring SEGA cabinets. While these things still popup here time to time.

Space permitting, should be able to hoard ~20 units.
Mitsubishi RPTVs are the best - the projection unit is a self-contained brick, which is easy to remove and store.

Thoughts?

Make sure they're the size/aspect ratio you need before going through the trouble.

Almost all of them can be converted to 50" standard.
All 16:9 CRTs and most DLPs can run 4:3 no-stretch mode.

This one was 16:9 originally:

Size can be fixed with mirror positioning and playing with focus.
Probably won't work (without replacing the lens) for 75"+ TV scrambled into 50", but 65" should not be a problem.

If original TV is 16:9 aspect with 65" size, than it's screen height matches 50" 4:3 height perfectly, thus can project directly into 50" in no-stretch 4:3 mode.

All real interesting info. I had a hell of a time finding one that'd work for 40" 4:3, so I figured I'd throw it out there.
