Hello. I can't find any current information about a possible conversion of MK2 from 4mb to 8mb rom version.

I know that you can upload a batch from version 3.1 but is it possible to replace the PAL/GAL A-17748 chip with another one so that the game works 100%.

I have two MK2 boards but without a memory expansion board and I want to determine what I need - a memory expansion board or a set of 8mb ROM chips and a PAL/GAL chip.

Best regards

I've done this conversion 2 or 3 times now. there are just 3 things you need to do:
1. you need to replace a PAL at UF17, you can get the replacement JED file in the pld archive https://wiki.pldarchive.co.uk/index.php?title=Mortal_Kombat_II and write it to a GAL16V8
2. there are 4 solderable jumpers that need to be set,
3. programming all of the 8Mbit ROMs. which you can get the files for in MAME

there is a how to thread here: https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/mortal-kombat-2-pcb-4mb-to-8mb-rom-conversion.336539/

Thank you for your answer.
Could you tell me exactly what chips you used? I ask because I see that there are several versions of GAL16V8 with different endings a, b, c etc. and exactly what 8mb chips did you use?

Any of the gal16v8 variants should work. I've found the gal16v8d to be the cheapest and easiest to find

For the 8Mbit roms any 27c080 or 27c801 should work

I think I have a spare memory expansion board I would be willing to sell, if that’s another option you would like to consider.
