What's new
"I read in a recent interview with the Analogue guy that he tried to talk Cave into letting him manufacture new arcade boards under license and they wouldn't go for it."

Maybe the terms were not acceptable to Cave and there was not much money in the deal..money talks man
That's not actually what the interview said.

"Taber pitched Cave on licensing a limited run of DoDonPachi Blue arcade boards, so that enthusiasts could finally experience another version of a classic game. But, unfortunately, the components required to build the PCBs were no longer in production, and Cave didn’t have any left lying around. As far as Taber knows, there are a few boards left in existence — probably in the hands of contest participants — but he’s still never had a chance to sink a quarter into that particular cab."

I know im being repetitive, but instead of focusing on over-hyped-shmup-king-wannabes like Cave... Why don't we go for the real thing?
I could be wrong but peaking at the MAME source and looking at some PCB pictures to determine the feasibility of a conversion. The impression I got is that this may fall into a similar trap as Konami boards, where each game has a unique PCB making it not really viable for conversion and thus not viable for a multi.

Here's Pipi and Bipi: (interestingly this seem to be the only game that has a rom version with a shared PCB, it shares it with Teki Paki, but even then the SUB-PCB is missing on Teki Paki)

Here's Grind Stormer:

Here's Batrider:

and here's Battle Bakraid:

Each game on this "platform" has a completely different PCB layout. I mean maybe they've all got identical hardware and ROMs could be re-worked for it, but I doubt they would have gone through the trouble of making whole new PCBs for each game if they were all using the same chips.

Maybe the solution is to contact CAVE and sell an officially licensed multi kit

All things considered, a PGM multi seems to make most sense. Here's why:

  • Cart-based system allows for a plug and play solution à la NeoGeo
  • No existing or announced competing products/solutions
  • Hardware is very similar to NeoGeo and encryption has been broken
  • Boards are quite cheap and relatively easy to come by (less than 100€ for a working one, shipping included)
  • Game library complements rather than overlaps with NeoGeo library. Best of PGM, including 4-player games and original CAVE titles:
    • Beat 'em ups: Knights of Valour 1 & 2, Oriental Legend, The Gladiator
    • Shmups: DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou (+Black Label), Espgaluda, Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi and DoDonPachi 2: Bee Storm
    • Run'n Gun: Demon Front
  • Chances of legal consequences are virtually non-existent

Seeing how they are a Japanese company, they are likely to never go for it. Their entire board needs to approve such a thing, not majority vote like Western businesses. All it takes is one senior member to not be into it. Most likely the problem would be quality control related. If the company has no hand in the production they’d likely not go for it. They can’t afford ANYTHING to mess up their name. A company like Sega can afford to license crappy projects. Although they don’t really make much off games anymore, I can assure you they are definitely making money off pachinko these days. All the plug and play crap doesn’t hurt them much. Cave is a whole different story, I believe the company doesn’t even have 200 employees...and that’s including EVERYONE, not just development staff. Even taking a risk on having a high quality product attached to their name could be a big deal should something go wrong.

As for doing it without their permission anyway...
From cases I had to study in business law, I’m of the opinion that Cave would ultimately lose the case. Especially for games over 20 years old and in no way shape or form being released on modern platforms. However; I don’t think Darksoft and Mitsu have the extra cash (or time) lying around to defend themselves, and then file a counter suit to try and reclaim losses from defending themselves in the first place. It would be a long drawn out mess, one that I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.

Would that be feasible?
Agree, but a multi will most likely not be possible. Maybe a repro fpga board that can be reflashed/reconfigured for the different pcb revisions between games that can emulate the different hardware perfectly :)

For now I will be happy with:

CPS1
PGM

Hopeful that one day we will see something with the top titles for:

Cave
Toaplan
Konami

As these boards prices are insane and/or they are just failing.

While it would be super cool to have Truxton 2, Battle Garegga, and Batrider all on one multi cart...
It ultimately wouldn't be one I would purchase, I don't have a proper tate setup and I'm not willing to dedicate a Vewlix to it.

Looks like its ports or emulation for me.

This and the Naomi are basically the last two "grail" multi carts for me.
PGM would be pretty cool, but not a must have (I'd still buy it tho). :)

Do you have a PACER account? could you look up to see if CAVE has actually brought suit against anyone or if this is all just baseless fear-mongering.

CPS1 is probably the most wanted for me as well. Capcom doesn’t seem to mind lol.

The Vewlix tates just fine... I can't see the point of opening it all up, switching the LCD only to play one multi cart (with 3 good games on it).
I'd be more likely to use my HAS and tate my OLED, it's a much faster rotate process. Again tho, then my living room will be setup to play tate shooters (and nothing else, no bluray, no consoles, no TV).

My girl might still have access to Japanese electronic records (she obtained a business degree in Yokohama), but she graduated ten years ago so I’m not sure. I only have access to US records.
